Little Will went missing and came back to find his best friend obsessed with this girl he never met, and he is confused when Lucas and Dustin are obsessed with the new girl; Max, little Will doesn’t think girls can play video games, skate, go to science camps, etc.
Little Will doesn’t understand what’s so great about girls and why suddenly all his best friends are obsessed with them and feels isolated and left behind and broken.
Even tho he doesn’t get it, goes along with his friends in befriending Max… and ends up discovering a new kind of friendship with her; a girl that is not what he expects at all, but she’s so cool and so different from him but also from his friends and actually allows him to be more sensitive and talk about things he could never talk about with the boys, she even understands him in things like his dad, having a rough home life, etc, she also doesn’t treat him like he’s about to break, she actually supports Will in discovering he is tougher than he or anyone else thought.
Little Max finds an unexpected friend in Will, Max loves his sassy side and thrives having a close friend that can unexpectedly match her attitude and get her humor, that understands her struggles with her family, a boy that she can talk to surprisingly easily. A boy that is not hitting on her (like Lucas and Dustin) and that’s also not being rude to her (like Mike) who understands being traumatized as a kid, having complicated family dynamics and having to live around abusive assholes. They talk comics and movies and talk shit about Mike when he annoys Will, etc.
Max also sees her friend lose his mind at 13 and then years later after her closest friends leave town she goes through kind of the same thing.
Max and Will form a strong bond without anyone really noticing, and both feel a bit out of place when El comes back, neither of them knew her before but she’s been hunting their friend group the same way.
Max probably notices Will’s queerness but allows him the space to figure himself out. Loves going on double dates with Mike and Will and is their biggest shipper as much as she is Mike’s #1 Op.
She also befriends El and helps her and Will get close as well, forming a little trio that understands each other better than anyone else could
Max then loses her brother and her two closest friends when they move to California, the place she misses and that holds most of her good memories. Will tries to find all the things Max loved about California and shares them with her to feel close to her.
Will and El call and write to Max about everything and anything and knowing they are in the place that Max grew up in (even if it’s not the same exact town) being in California makes them feel close to Max and vice versa.
Will and Max both being mind controlled in a way by the same entity, yet another thing that just cements their unbreakable bond.
Will goes everyday to the hospital, he paints for Max, he talk to her and is there for Lucas. He takes her flowers from El and also reads her the letters his sister writes for her.
She chuckled looking at the project that he’d gotten her a smile spreading across her face. “Okay but like… this is awesome.” She know knew exactly what she’d be doing with her Sunday.
