whiskey kisses
who knew after all these years, they’d be in a decently functioning relationship. it was something new and exciting for the both of them, and somehow terrifying all together. they were taking it slow, baby steps seemed to be making it work between them, minus their normal pickering. it wasn’t like much changed between the two idiots, their friendship just got elevated with a bit more touching than before, but nothing else seemed to change, which she was grateful for. it wasnt a difficult transition for them, however it was the first time both parties had someone wanting them happy, which was taking small adjustments for both of them.
it was one of those odd nights they stayed at his place, it was a compromise they made so any other night she could see her cat, and as much as she loved his place, she’d never admit to it. the wind was hitting against the window as the waves crashed along the distance rocks and sand, he always had the nicest views and it always lulled her into a deep sleep. he was seated next to her on his side of the best, flipping through his own papers as she sat next to him flipping through a murder mystery she picked up on their last book store outing. the silence wasn’t awkward, it was almost comforting, and as more time passed through their relationship things she once found nerve racking in her previous relationship was comforting coming from him. picking her head up from her book, she turned to the brunette on her side, moving to adjust her glasses as she opened her mouth before retreating back into herself. it took three more moments of her opening her mouth, attempting to form words before he was calling her out. “spit it out red, don’t let that brain work too hard” he teased, he played annoyed well but now that they were seeing each other she quickly realized it was more of his way of being sweet to her.
laughing a bit she shoved her finger into the corner of her book before rolling her eyes, “idiot” she muttered before looking back at him. the thing with newly dating someone, things weren’t always clear, and they had some different experiences with dating, so each event just seemed up in the air. “are we.. doing anything for valentine’s day?” gabby asked softly as she watched him pause, both of them had wheels turning behind their gazes and it was almost comforting to know he was always almost as confused as her. “do you..want to do something?” he asked her as they stared at each other, she didn’t want him to think she expected anything, but she wasn’t sure how he felt about it either. “i don’t really care, not that i don’t care about you…i just don’t mind what we do if we even do anything..” she was rambling and they both knew it, and he looked like he was trying not to say something as she narrowed her eyes at him. “shut up” she laughed out as she moved to tuck her head against his shoulder, not looking at him would help her nerves.
a part of her wanted to do something special for him, when was the last time someone did something for him out of love? moving to kiss his shoulder she smiled a bit before moving out of his bubble to grab her phone, “you know what- my turn, i’ll plan it, you just show up” she said proudly as he raised an eyebrow at her. “great, so chaos?” he said giving her his normal deadpan and she rolled her eyes again at him, “don’t be an ass, i’ll wow your socks off just you wait” he was staring at her like she had three heads, and she learned early on it was just his normal state around her. “oh don’t give me that look, come on” she whined as started googling things, “when was the last time you let someone treat you to a nice night out?” she teased softly as they stared at each other, “exactly, now stop being annoying and be excited” he went to insult her again and she moved to cover his mouth with her free hand, and if they ended up ignoring their nightly stuff after that, then so be it.
he didn’t bring it up again, she wasn’t sure if he really even believed her about it, or if he just didn’t care enough to think about it, regardless she was near overflowing with excitement. she couldn’t remember the last time she got excited to do something with a partner, and knowing it was for him? something in her was even more excited. when the night rolled around, she knew it was going to be good, and even if he hated the entire thing, it wasn’t like he still wouldn’t get something out of it.
the red head insisted on taking her car, even when he stared at her a little longer, she just smiled his way and dragged him along. the drive wasn’t long, just a little ways out of the city, in some side community, and she ignored the way he stared at her throughout the ride, trying to figure out what she was doing, “you’re not making me do something silly right?” he questioned and she laughed, pulling into the fenced in area. she almost swelled with pride as he stared out the windows trying to figure it all out, the night was going to be fun, it had to be.
parking into the field like instructed she smiled at him, “okay, So!” she started as she unbuckled, “i did research, because I’m pretty great and they were having an Pakula night, and they play a bunch of his movies on a big screen and you get to chill out and watch it, and I got food from that place we like, your steak with those weird veggies” he was smiling at her, but she couldn’t tell if it was just polite or if he was genuinely happy, “you mean broccoli?” he questioned as she nodded, “and i brought a blanket so we can sit down and i drove so you could have your whiskey or if you want the wine i brought and i figured this was a good combo of all the stuff we both like, and I wont get completely overwhelmed and you’ll be well fed and watching a movie you like so.. I’m talking a lot” they were grinning at each other as she moved to lean over to kiss him softly, with a grin, “happy valentines day” she mumbled as they shared a small moment. “happy valentines day, gabs”.
