“Will you eat too?”
And so much for being relinquished from the deal. Even Max’s memory lapse wouldn’t free him apparently.
“Yup. Made a whole sandwich for myself and everything.”
Max is eyeing him but he keeps blinking and rubbing his eyes.
“Everything okay, Maxy?”
“What- yes- fine- I-” He breaks off. “I had some medicine beside the bed did you-”
“I have it, yes.” Daniel interrupts.
“Why?”
“I was afraid the cats would get into it. It was all over the table.”
“Oh…” He can tell it doesn’t sound right to Max, but that he also doesn’t have enough brain power to call him on it. “Can I have them back?”
“After you eat.” Maybe.
“Daniel-”
“Less talking, more eating.” He places the sandwich on a paper plate (Daniel certainly didn’t want to do dishes and he doubted Max could stand that long in his current state) placing it in front of Max along with a bowl of soup. “Bon appetit.”
Max stares at the food, still blinking, then looks up at Daniel.
Daniel grins, trying not to let the worry fill his eyes. Sitting beside Max, he doesn’t think, shoving a spoonful of soup into his mouth. It’s good. He has to admit it’s good. It’s very good. Max is still staring at him. He eats a little more before grabbing the grilled cheese and dunking it in the soup.
Max looks from Daniel to the food and back before carefully picking up his own spoon. The first bite he takes is a relief. Because this means it’s working. This means they’ll be okay. This means GP was wrong and he is perfectly capable of handling a probably strung out, definitely sick Max Verstappen all on how own.
He fights the urge to fill the silence, shoveling food in his mouth instead. If he doesn’t think about it maybe the calories don’t count. If he keeps eating, maybe Max will keep eating too.
Max eats almost half of the sandwich and more than half of the soup. Then he stops, closing his eyes. He lets out a breath through his nose then holds out his hand. “Can I have the medicine now?”
Daniel chews his bite slowly, not wanting to think or talk or deal with this right now. “What do you need them for, Maxy?”
Max peaks up at him, eyes only a squint. “I am an adult. I do not have to answer to you.”
“No,” Daniel concedes slowly, “But I also don’t gotta give ‘em to you if I think they’ll hurt you.”
