#octoberhorrormoviechallenge 36 & 37: John Carpenter’s Vampires & Ghosts of Mars It’s a John Carpenter Double Bill tonight. First up, Vampires, which I admit I had trouble getting into, although that may simply have been because James Woods was the lead. Carpenter does pull of some pretty good visuals and set pieces, like an early raid on a vampire layer which has a very The Thing feel at points. A pretty impressive amount of gore for the time too, with a good attempt at making the vampires feel like a real threat. However, it doesn’t add as much to the table of vampire lore as say From Dusk Till Dawn, Near Dark, or Blade, and the over macho script makes all the leads pretty unlikeable (doubly so James Woods). Also, Thomas Ian Griffith is just awful as the lead vampire. Great to look at though, and pretty good music, like all of Carpenter’s movies. Ghosts of Mars then; it’s got a fun premise, lots of talent either side of the camera, it’s pretty well made (I’m a sucker for anything with good modelwork)... so why does this feel so damn dull? Why doesn’t it come alive? I think it’s simply that the script has some very weird pacing, including a lot of flashbacks within flashbacks, and the editing of both the story and actual film leave a lot to be desired. It’s not without some interest, like it’s fascinating that the future colonised Mars is implied to be a matriarchy, and hey, Jason Statham had hair once! But otherall, it’s a bit of a chore to get through quite frankly. Hey, just realised; both Hobbs & Shaw have been in films about people on a future Mars getting possessed!
