MIAMI (AP) — A South Florida artist is facing a criminal charge after police say he smashed a $1 million vase at Miami's new art museum in what appears to be a form of protest.
Maximo Caminero, 51, was charged with criminal mischief after Sunday's incident at the Perez Art Museum Miami. According to a Miami Police Department arrest affidavit, a security guard told officers that Caminero picked up a colored vase by Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei. When told to put it down, the security guard said Caminero smashed it on the floor.
A police affidavit says Caminero told officers he broke the vase to protest the museum's lack of local artist displays.
Okay, this stresses me out SO MUCH. Ai Weiwei's works were old chinese pots, some said to be around 2000 years old, which he painted bright pastel colors as a part of an exhibition. He himself deliberately broke one of the pots, and there were photos at the exhibition of him doing this.
So this other guy comes in, angry that the museum is focused more on international artists, and decides that he'll do what Ai Weiwei did - he'll take a priceless pot and SMASH IT ON THE FLOOR.
I'm already pretty mad at Ai Weiwei for that initial destruction, and though I guess I should be mad at what he's done to these pots in the first place, I understand artistic appropriation and that the exhibition was meant to be controversial, adding a "modern" touch on a legitimate piece of art made around 2 millenniums ago. But what pisses me off the most is that this ONE GUY went up and DESTROYED ANOTHER ARTIST'S PIECE OF WORK. That is an UNBELIEVABLY shitty thing to do.
I don't care about the motives - the museum's selection of artwork is up to them, and this guy could have made a complaint, made a piece to protest, made a statement about this - but instead, he actually destroys another artist's piece of work because he's pissed off at the museum housing it. What a fucking child. How dare he.
