Would it be fair to characterize defrauding your (notoriously cash-strapped) community out of thousands of dollars as a Community Problem, and if so, should that problem be challenged even though the direct cause of that problem was a black trans woman? Because it kind of seems like your position at this point amounts to, "OK, I guess it looks pretty bad, but trans women face bigger threats than one bad actor, and, besides, it's racist to criticize black women when they steal. Let's forget it."

I am saying it’s IS a community problem, that can’t be solved without addressing the systemic material conditions that leads to situations like this one individual deciding to grift. You are not gonna prevent a future situation like this occurring again, without addressing the material conditions that created it and enabled it.

This is about attacking the root of the how this situation likely occurred, not a demand to not criticize individuals such as Tara. (tho the vast majority of “criticism” I have witnessed broadly online in this case has been various additional accusations/character assassinations of other harm from her “she’s a rapist/pedophile!” “All her writing is ai generated!” with near 0 evidence, so I am also critical of said criticism for that reason. Corporate Virtue Signaling

Corporate virtue signaling is something that has always bothered me and I’ve noticed that more and more businesses have jumped on the trend of using their advertising platforms to promote social justice and political ideologies.  Even when I agree with the general message of a specific advertisement, I find this trend alarming.  

Corporations only have one fundamental motive: to make profit.  

Because of the profit principle, we should be very cautious at allowing corporations to become the voices molding the moral canon of society.  Corporations will only take action on the specific issues they think will benefit the bottom line.  Issues that don’t make the cut, no matter how serious or legitimate they are, will at best be ignored and may even be suppressed if they have the possibility of hurting profit.   

Let’s take the example of Blizzard, the makers of World of Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft.  They were quick to push the BLM agenda because they identified that an appeal to BLM could help to expand from their largely white and asian male player base into other demographic groups (presumably without losing too much of their original player base).  But when their moral principles were challenged over the human rights violations at the Hong Kong protests, they sided with the Chinese government in order to sell their products to the single largest consumer market in the world.  

Or let’s take a look at the below letter from LEGO.  At first glance it looks innocent, even wholesome.  Of course parents should provide their daughters with the toys they prefer.  But, isn’t it awfully convenient for LEGO that the fix to sexism and way of breaking gender stereotypes is for more parents to buy their daughters one of LEGO’s products?  A close examination of the market forces at work here can quickly turn wholesome into self serving.  

Corporations have some of the largest platforms that exist.  They hold all of the advertisement money that funds social media, search engines, influencers, and the traditional media.  That’s not including all of the lobby money corporations use to nudge the government one way or the other.  

With such large platforms, corporations can magnify the social issues that benefit their wallets without ever considering if those social issues are legitimate, beneficial, or high priority.  In the meantime, social issues that have no benefit for corporations will be drowned out by the noise and issues that hurt corporations will be actively suppressed. 

Do we really feel comfortable allowing corporations to control the moral narrative?
