Ardbert August- Fiction Friday
Melodies of Life
The Crystarium was buzzing with more activity than usual as a hooded man narrowly dodged several giggling children that ran past him. He took a moment to adjust his hood and let out a small sigh as he realized it was still secure. A small squeeze to his hand drew his attention to his companion— the Warrior of Light and Darkness, his shard, and now husband—Maxwell Hylfyst.
Maxwell gave his husband a reassuring smile and Ardbert couldn't help but return a smile of his own. "So exactly what is this event you're dragging me to in the middle of our honeymoon?" Ardbert asked his husband causing Maxwell's eyes to glimmer in amusement.
"It's a surprise." Maxwell replied as he began to tug Ardbert along to their destination. Ardbert let out a small huff of laughter. "Is it now? Good one, I hope?" He smiled as Maxwell made a noncommital hum while dragging him through the Crystarium and towards the library. As they entered Moren glanced up from the book he was currently reading and smiled.
"Have they been put up yet? " Maxwell asked eagerly.
"They have and the library's new art gallery has been a huge hit, in no small part thanks to your help. People are eager to learn about our history and to those who came before us." Moren hugged his book to his chest. "You and your companion are welcome to spend as much time as you like there." He offered.
The two gave their thanks and as they continued on Ardbert couldn't help himself but ask in amusement. "So the surprise is artwork?"
Maxwell chuckled. "Something like that, yes."
Before Ardbert could ask another question he stepped dead in his tracks as they entered the gallery. The room was filled with salvaged artwork from various periods and lands across Novrandt. Citizens from Crystarium, Eulmore, and Raktika wandered around admiring the art and parents pointing out the various art while telling their children the stories. A small crowd lingered in front of the largest wall with 5 main pieces.
Ardbert's eyes widened and his breath caught as 5 very familiar faces stared back at him. Ones he hadn't seen in too long.
"So? What do you think?" Maxwell's quiet voice startled him and drew him back to the present. His husband was searching his face for his reaction. After a moment he replied in befuddlement.
"I dont unders-...Why?" His eyebrows furrowed as he questioned in confusion.
"The Crystalline Mean launched a historical project to recover what they could of the First's past so they could pass the history of your people to future generations. A way to give voice to the past" Maxwell explained. He nodded towards the 5 portraits on the far wall. "They also wished to show their thanks and pay tribute to those who gave them the ability to have this future. The Warriors of Light."
"I..." Ardbert's voice broke off and he could feel his eyes begin to burn as he gazed at the people looking at portraits of his friends. Their eyes and voices filled with awe, gratitude, and love.
"Do you need to get some air?" His husband's gentle voice. When Ardbert nodded, Maxwell gently lead him to a spot where they could be alone.
_______
A gentle breeze ruffled Ardbert's hair as he stared at the glowing Crystal amongst the backdrop of a glittering night sky. A feeling he's still can't believe he ever took for granted. The only sound was the bustle of the Crystarium and the small chirps from the little Amaro chick named Loulou who had grown attached to him. He glanced over at his husband to see he too was staring into the distance.
"Did you paint them?" He wondered aloud. Maxwell glanced over at him with a smile.
"No, the artists from the Mean did. I only gave them the descriptions of how your friends looked." He replied.
"Thank you. It was good to see their faces again. I think I'm ready to head home." Ardbert smiled with fondness at the look of happiness on his husband's face as he called the Source home.
_______
Ardbert reclined back on a giant moogle floatie that his husband insisted they lay on during the Moonfire Faire and stared at the night sky he had become familiar with in his time on the Source. A sky he once found odd looking now one that he finds himself now feeling lucky to be able to see every night. The music playing and children splashing were white noise in the background as he thought about his friends and where his life (and death) had taken him.
The feeling of the floatie shifting drew his attention to his companion. "Are you feeling alright?" He didn't point out that he could here a small hint of worry in his love's voice.
"Aye, I was just thinking about the past and where I am now." He gently replied.
"Any regrets?"
"Plenty, but none of them are about the fact my path lead me here and now to you." Ardbert reassured his love as they gently entangled their legs together. The two lovers leaned in for a kiss only for the sound of fireworks bursting overhead to startled them apart. They couldn't help but look at each other and laugh.
Ardbert Week Day 8: Tomorrow & Tomorrow
"You're ridiculous you know that?"
"And yet, you married me."
