Indie 5-0: 5 Questions with Maxwell Powers
Maxwell Powers is going to be your favorite new synth-pop artist of the year. His single, “Money”, is the second off of his upcoming EP, “6 Things”. We had the chance to talk to him for a bit about his experience writing and recording the track, and what we can expect from him in the future!
1. Congrats on releasing your new single, “Money”! Can you tell us little more about the inspiration behind this song? Thanks! “Money (More)” deals with the age-old question of Money and Fame, and whether to strive for them, or GTF in the opposite direction. Living in the midst of the tech scene in San Francisco, it’s a question we’re still grappling with. Everyone wants to become a tech millionaire, but also wants to spend their time off at burning man. More personally, the song mirrors my own journey chasing (and questioning) Money and Fame through music and technology.
The song was recorded entirely in the corner of my living room in Oakland, and the final mix was produced by the illustrious Mikael Eldridge (Tycho, DJ Shadow).
2. What’s the best part about being an independent musician? The worst?
The best: I can drink out of a mug that says “Like a Boss,” and it’s not wrong.
The worst: The butler service is terrible at the fortress of solitude. I.E. I have to take the promotion and marketing side of music as seriously as the music part.
3. Who were your biggest musical inspirations when growing up?
I had a drum teacher growing up who was formerly a studio drummer. Every week I would cram into his studio, which was piled from floor to ceiling with old CDs. I’d sit at the drum set, but we’d spend most of the time just sitting and listening to records. He introduced me to a lot of stuff I wouldn’t have heard otherwise… mostly a lot of classic and funk songs that had unusual or interesting beats. Steve Miller Band, Chicago, Paul Simon, Parliament, and so on. It’s been a long and circuitous journey from there to folk to indie rock to electronic since.
4. What was it like working with producers Mikael Eldridge and Sean Beresford?
It’s both inspiring and humbling to work with talented folks like Mikael and Sean that have been in the industry for years.
Mikael, who I’ve only met recently, has an uncanny ability to take my living room recordings and turn them into electro-pop gold.
I’ve learned a ton from Sean about audio plugin hacks and old-school routing techniques. I’ve known Sean for years…he recorded my previous band Roosevelt Radio in Third Eye Blind’s private studio in the early 2010s.
5. What’s next for you?
Lather, rinse, repeat. Taking a moment to celebrate the release of my first EP 6 Things this summer, then getting back to creating.

Now, I present an artist that I am proud to have discovered. With the song Oh/No, here is Maxwell Powers ft. Ash Reiter.
