A series of somewhat unfortunate and comedic events after a quest for food leave Amanda saying thank you in her head until she finally says it out loud.

“Rollins?”
“Huh?” Amanda mumbles sleepily, rubbing at her eyes as she lifts her head from a file.
“Looks like you could use a break,” Olivia says, hopeful. “ride with me?”
“Sure,” Amanda shrugs, turning to get her coat. “but don’t tell me it’s another domestic, I’ve had enough of he said, she said for a while.” she sighs.
Olivia smiles in her direction, waiting for Amanda to meet her at the elevator before they step inside.
“Actually,” she laughs. “I’m taking you to dinner.”
The blonde attempts to hide her shock as the doors close in front of them, teetering on the toes of her boots.
“Not Chinese again?” she jokes, tightening her ponytail as she looks to her sergeant.
“Definitely not,” Olivia tells her pointedly, scowling at the very idea. “regardless of what Fin says, I refuse to believe that one’s sustenance can be found in a box of moo shu pork.”
“Pizza?” Amanda suggests as they step out of the elevator.
Olivia shakes her head again, opening the door for Amanda as they leave the precinct.
“Chino’s.” she says gleefully, a bigger smile than Amanda has seen in recent weeks. “Carbonara, bolognese, the best garlic bread you’ve ever had. Good food, real food.” the sergeant adds.
Amanda salivates at the thought, that kind of home cooked food better than what she’s eaten in months; shaking herself from the idea with mouth wide in anticipation after catching Olivia’s amused look.
“I’ll remember that,” the brunette muses, unlocking the sedan so that she can slide into the drivers seat.
“What?”
“That italian food turns you on.” Olivia replies promptly, biting her lip as her hands meet the steering wheel. “I- I didn’t mean-”
But Amanda just laughs, loud and full, rocking forward in the passenger seat until she’s doubled over herself.
“I really needed that.” she wheezes between bouts of giggles until Olivia, too, is laughing.
“Come on, Georgia peach, if food is what does it for you then Chino’s is the place to be.”
Amanda blushes as they pull from the curb, smiling into the lapel of her coat.
“I love this song!” she exclaims after a few minutes, relaxing as she turns up the volume.
Olivia watches Amanda change in that instant, struggling to keep her eyes in both of the places that they need to be, because she’ll be damned if there isn’t something about the blonde that holds her there. She’d never quite considered what music her youngest detective would like, but somehow the answer doesn’t surprise her. Country, thick guitar, and vocals that want for something in a way that Olivia thoroughly understands when Amanda lets her hair down, tosses it over her shoulder, and smiles in her direction.
“Looks like I’m going to have to arrest you!” Amanda laughs over the continuing song.
“What do you mean?” Olivia blushes, shaking her head as she turns her attention back to the road.
“You just ran through a stop sign.”
“Oh, shit.” the sergeant curses, throwing a backwards glance towards the road.
“I was joking.” Amanda admits, smiling sheepishly into her hands.
Olivia scoffs, punching the blonde’s arm playfully, before she surprises her colleague by beginning to sing along to the radio’s new tune.
Amanda smiles at her, matching the woman note for note after only a line as they begin to sing out of tune with the windows down.
By the time they reach the dimly lit side street, both women are flushed and smiling; Amanda’s coat haphazard and windblown as her hair.
“Come on,” Olivia grins, tugging on the blonde’s sleeve. “my stomach is about to eat itself.”
It’s chilly out and so Amanda tightens the belt of her coat, following close enough behind the brunette for her front to graze the brunette’s back until they’re warm inside.
“Oh god…” she mumbles, breathing deeply. “that smells amazing.”
“I know right,” Olivia nods, stepping towards the counter. “go pick a table.”
“We’re not headin’ back?”
“Nah, we’ve got time.” she shrugs.
Amanda slips the coat from her shoulders, throwing it over the back of the nearest seat as Olivia negotiates their meal.
“I’d live here if I could.” the sergeant confesses with a smirk, sitting across from the detective with an armful of takeout containers.
She selects three from the top and a roll of foil that once cracked open reveals a golden, buttery, loaf of garlic bread that Amanda reaches for without thought.
“Oh, mmm, this’ good.” she offers through a mouthful.
Olivia twirls some bolognese on her fork, spearing a meatball as a last edition before placing it between her own lips with a satisfied sigh.
“This is almost better than a day off.” she jokes, twirling another strand of spaghetti on her fork.
“I’m inclined to agree,” Amanda nods, following suit until their forks tangle in the same piece. “mine.” she growls playfully.
Olivia raises her eyebrows, stabbing at the blonde’s fork with her own until they push a meatball off the plate and on to the floor. They both stare mournfully at the lost delicacy for a few moments before gathering it in a napkin.
“See what you made me do.” Olivia grumbles, narrowing her eyes at the other woman.
“Hey, all I did was stake my claim, you were the one dumb enough to challenge me.” she laughs. “There were so many better ways that wouldn’t have left us down one delicious meatball.”
“Ha! Like what? Were you expecting I would be less into sword fighting and more into Lady and the Tramp?”
“Wha- oh.” Amanda blushes, feeling her heart beat faster as she begins sticking lids back on the containers.
“Hey,” Olivia frowns. “I was only teasing, I didn’t mean anything by it.” she rushes, reaching for Amanda’s arm.
She catches the blonde’s movement, running her thumb along Amanda’s thinly covered forearm before receiving a smile.
“I know,” Amanda assures weakly. “but we better get back, I’m sure the boys are getting hungry.”
“Okay.” Olivia replies reluctantly, stacking the containers back into their bag.
Amanda steps out before her, taking a deep breath of the crisp night air that sneaks a shiver into her coat.
“You wanna’ drive?” Olivia asks, jingling the keys in her palm.
Amanda shrugs, taking them from her anyway, their hands grazing as she does so. Her fingers shake as she pulls open the door, shaking her head as she starts the ignition.
“What was that sound?”
“I don’t-”
The engine cuts before Amanda can finish her sentence, leaving Olivia frowning her direction.
“You broke it.” she accuses, reaching across the seats to try the ignition herself.
“I didn’t do a darn thing.” the blonde grumps, leaning back in her seat as the sergeant practically lays atop her.
“Move over.” Olivia tells her, climbing over to the drivers side as Amanda scrambles out.
“It ain’t gonna work.” she sing-songs, scuffing her boot on the pavement. “Sounds like the engine’s dead.”
“It can’t be dead, it was fine when I drove here.”
“Then maybe you broke it.”
Olivia mumbles something into the steering wheel as she rests her head against its cool surface with frustration.
“Come on,” Amanda sighs, trying to push down her earlier discomfort as she reaches for Olivia’s hand. “we better start walking.”
“Why don’t we call someone?” Olivia pouts, staring at their going-cold takeout with disdain.
“It’s a nice night,” Amanda tells her. “besides, it’s only a few blocks back. Someone will pick up the car in the morning.”
With a little more prompting, Olivia warms to the idea, stepping out and closing the door with a look slightly less forlorn than before.
“You’ll see your baby good as new tomorrow.” Amanda laughs. “Now stop dragging your feet and come walk with me.”
Olivia can’t suppress her smile, falling step to step with Amanda as they each carry a few bags down the street.
“I’m sorry,” she apologises after a block and few passers by. “earlier, I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
“It’s nothin’.” Amanda shrugs, rubbing the back of her neck as she steps awkwardly around the curb.
“I don’t believe you.” Olivia shoots back.
“You’re stallin’ us,” Amanda says, shaking her head as she keeps walking. “the food is gonna’ be cold by the time we make it back.”
“I don’t care about the food!” Olivia calls, chasing Amanda’s fast pace three more streets until she trips on a piece of chipped pavement.
Amanda hears the fall, dropping the food as she rushes back.
“I’m fine,” Olivia assures, attempting to push herself up from the ground unsuccessfully.
“Let me see it,” Amanda whispers, pulling the sergeants leg out from beneath her. “yeah, just a scratch.” she breathes thankfully after a quick assessment.
“I really am sorry,” Olivia husks, nose brushing Amanda’s cheek.
“Forget about it,” Amanda mumbles, standing to brush herself off. “here.” she offers, thrusting out her hand.
Olivia is still awkward, but makes it to her feet.
“You’re a real disaster tonight.” Amanda laughs.
“I didn’t break the car.” Olivia defends, wincing as she touches her new cut.
“Keep your hands away!” Amanda chastises, taking the woman’s fingers back in her own. “I’ll clean it up when we get back.”
“You don’t have to-”
“And I know you didn’t break the car.”
“Oh,” Olivia blushes, leaning against the blonde for support. “yeah, I don’t think it was your fault either.”
“Good,” Amanda smiles. “now lets go, we’re just down there anyway.”
“Carry me?” Olivia jokes, wrapping her arm around Amanda’s.
“Hell no, I ain’t carrying your ass anywhere.”
Olivia stops limping , turning to pout at the woman.
“Fine.” Amanda grumbles, and in one swift movement she has the brunette surprised and off the ground, hauled over her shoulder unsteadily as she continues walking.
“I take it back!” Olivia squeals, drawing the attention of passers by. “I can walk, I can walk!”
“Are you sure?” Amanda teases, leaning the woman precariously as she reaches to pick up their takeout.
“I’ll give you anything you want.” Olivia pleads, winding Amanda with an accidental prod to the stomach.
“Yer’ impossible.” Amanda gasps, catching her breath as she sets Olivia down.
Olivia is breathing heavy too, turning her head to see the precinct only two buildings down from where they stand.
“I didn’t actually think you could do that.” she admits, attempting to tame her tousled hair.
“You doubt your best detective?” Amanda winks, rubbing the spot Olivia had jutted on her abdomen.
“Someone’s getting cocky.” she laughs, resting her hand on Amanda’s shoulder.
“We should go up.” Amanda breathes, shaking the food in her hand.
“Yeah.” Olivia whispers, glancing from her feet back to Amanda without making a move away.
“Why’d you make the Lady and the Tramp joke?”
“Because I see the way you look at me.”
Amanda blushes again, looking to the ground.
“And what does that mean?” she asks quietly.
“It means that you miss me looking at you because every time I notice you do this.”
“Do what?” Amanda asks, looking back up at the woman whose hand now rests on the space of skin between her neck and shoulder.
She realises then, that Olivia actually needn’t tell her a thing. Then they’re kissing and Amanda is thanking everything from insatiable hunger, the need for nutrition, and their sedan breaking down; she thanks everything until she mumbles one out loud and Olivia laughs and they stop kissing.
“Do you usually say thank you when someone kisses you?” the sergeant teases lightly, placing another peck on the blonde’s lips.
“No,” Amanda admits. “but I feel like the situation called for it.”
“Come on,” Olivia smiles. “we better head up.”
“Yeah.” Amanda replies, dizzy.
And they fall back into step side by side, only this time their hands don’t graze, they hold.
Hey! Congrats on the birth of your little man!! I hope you, him and your wife are all doing well! X
We are doing great. :-) We are struggling with the breastfeeding (it is damn hard!), but now that all the jaundice is gone we are on a great path. I can't believe he has been here a week!
Olivia accidentally sees a picture on Amanda's phone, apparently meant for her.
Olivia’s pen scratches along the pages beneath her hand, ink finally beginning to run dry after a full day of monotonous paperwork that leaves the sergeant yawning nearly every three minutes.
A ringing from the next room jolts the brunette from her half awake state, attempting to ignore the distraction as it continues for nearly a full minute. Olivia can see the squad room through her updrawn blinds, apparently devoid of all occupants since her last visit for coffee; though its emptiness clearly unnoticed by the cell phone that chimes a message tone only moments later. When it quiets again (thankfully) the sergeant returns to one of her final papers only to be interrupted once more. The message tone plays three more times before she reaches it at the desk of her youngest leading detective.
“Should have guessed,” she sighs, plucking up the item. “Third time this month she’s left it here.”
Olivia almost drops the cell as it vibrates and chimes in her hand, the screen lighting up with another message.
It’s hard not for her to glimpse at the screen, thoroughly surprised that when she does it’s a picture that she sees. For a few brief seconds, Olivia stares at the unusual photograph; sun drenched sand dunes that shadow two vaguely female figures doing cartwheels in the distance. Is one of the women Amanda? The message tone plays again as another picture comes in, this one with a half revealed caption.
“Thought you might like to have this killer shot. Maybe you could show it to Olivia…”
At the mention of her name the sergeant’s brow furrows, studying the picture of her detective closer than she had in her brief glance.
This time it’s definitely Amanda, Amanda up close with her face yellowed out by the sun and half her face covered with shades, hair glowing in the sunlight.
“Snooping through your squad’s texts now, are you?”
Olivia flushes at the blonde’s voice, watching the younger woman stride towards her with a lopsided smile.
“It was going off non-stop.” Olivia explains dumbly, handing the item back readily into Amanda’s outstretched hand.
The blonde unlocks her phone as Olivia hovers, biting her lip as she realises what her sergeant may have seen.
“It was a nice picture.” Olivia offers, sliding atop Amanda’s desk, casually. “You could tell it was nowhere near Manhattan.”
Both women laugh despite the slight embarrassment, both at being caught out and at the possibility of having seen too much.
“Yeah,” Amanda agrees. “I, ah, I went to Costa Rica during my time off. Thought that I could get some sun.”
Olivia smiles to herself as Amanda slides into her desk chair, checking off the explanation for the woman’s recent tan in her mind.
“I didn’t mean to peek,” she admits. “I really did think you’d left it here, I was gonna turn it off so that I could keep my peace and quiet.”
“S’Okay,” Amanda shrugs. “I forgive you.”
Olivia sways her feet lightly as silence falls over them, the toes of her boots nearly brushing Amanda’s shins with each movement, as the blonde fiddles with the case on her iphone.
The brunette speaks before truly filtering her words.
“Who’s Olivia?”
Amanda flushes deeply, flax coloured tresses falling around her face as she dips her head.
“Hoped you hadn’t seen that,” she confesses.
“Oh…” Olivia breathes. “So it was me?”
“Yeah,” Amanda mumbles. “My friend, Jennifer, she kinda- look, nevermind, here.” she shakes her head, thrusting the object back into her sergeant’s hands. “Look for yourself.”
Olivia’s mouth opens slightly in protest, ready to refuse the offer before curiosity gets the better of her.
She smiles at the picture of Amanda again, bright and smiling in a way that Olivia has never before been permitted to see. When she moves her gaze to the message it is with reluctance and the cost of losing sight of the glowing woman.
“Thought you might like to have this killer shot. Maybe you could show it to Olivia. Your crush on her must be starting to show by now!!! If this pic doesn’t make her tell you you’re hot then I don’t know what will!”
Olivia swallows roughly as she finishes, realising that in a way she’s fallen right into Amanda’s friend’s hands before even realising it. She begins to type.
“Liv?” Amanda questions. “What’re you doing?”
The brunette ignores her, continuing to type her message, passing back the phone once she’s pressed send.
Amanda takes the offered object hesitantly, lifting it to her face to read as Olivia slides from her desk with a sly smile.
“You’re right! She does look great!!! Honestly, I hadn’t noticed Amanda’s crush but now that I have, I’m severely hoping that you can convince her to ask me to dinner (: - Olivia.”
