okay so 👀 i have a very very rough barely started wip for heaven official's blessing which is inspired by all the amazing art of hua cheng and (a) statue(s) of xie lian. i know you're not just yet at that point in canon but you most probably have seen the fanart i've reblogged! (here's the piece that specifically inspired this)
so in this wip something happens and a statue or several (or all of them are/) is destroyed. the moment i still haven't written (but i'm sooo excited about because i think about it often!) is the moment hua cheng sees the outcome. whenever i think about it, from his perspective, it's like my heart freezes, my hands go cold, and everything becomes deathly silent. xie lian is the only god hua cheng believes in, the only light he's holding onto, the only reason he's where he is right now. he's dedicating all of himself to xie lian, and as the most devoted believer his only self-proclaimed goal is to worship and protect his god. and now those statues are destroyed.
(the lines that have been in my head since the very beginning of coming up with this idea are "what's the use of him? he couldn't even protect carved stone; what makes him think he could ever protect his god?")
