Big-headed Ground Beetle - Scarites subterraneus

Let's see one more prominent Beetle to round things off before switching to another insect order. Specifically, this post comes after 2 recent Beetle posts, of which I'm very appreciative for how much of an audience they both were able to find. I hope a similar fate awaits this species, but even if it doesn't, I'm proud to share such a find here. What a big head indeed, and what large mandibles it has too! The name says it all really: with a big head comes big mandibles, and we can all imagine what those massive jaws are used for. Soil-dwelling prey items such as worms, snails, and various soft-bodied insects would do well to beware the speed of this ferocious Ground Beetle species and the grip of its mandibles, lest they become dinner. That said, I don't wish to misconstrue this Beetle as a vicious killer. Rather, this species just does what it needs to do when hungry in order to remain healthy and well-fed throughout its life cycle. And despite the slicing/crushing power of their mandibles, that aren't a hazard against human skin. Having been bitten myself (not by the above individual), its little more than a pinch from the mandibles' front teeth depending on the angle. As for how I know that, individual #2 (see below) didn't take too kindly to being picked up and thusly nipped my finger, but calmed down afterwards. So, yes, if those big jaws weren't prominent enough, please don't go poking or prodding them.

When it comes to handling insects, it's best not to go asking for more trouble while trying to look at them closely. Especially since the crimped midsection of this Beetle allows it to better angle and position itself for a bite (there is a bit of an analog to how Hymenopterans can do the same thanks to their petiole, or wasp-waist). Looking at this one live might be a challenge as it moves with great haste, which is a common trait among Ground Beetles. As predators who rely on tackling grounded prey, and to evade insectivorous predators themselves, a Ground Beetle must move quickly and cover as long a stride as possible using their 6 legs. In addition, the frontmost legs of this species are thickened and lined with rounded ridges, similar to the legs of the Smooth Black Stag Beetle. Since that's the case, this is a clear sign that they are adapted for digging. It's a handy feature to have when part of their evasion behavior is to tuck underneath a stone, dig out of the ground, or move loose soil out from a crevice. In addition to strong legs, this species is also capable of strong flight. However, it does not hunt via flight, and it is rare to see such flight except if needed to escape, disperse, or potentially flip over. I bring this up as not all species within the Scarites genus actually have wings; there are many who are flightless (another occasional trait among Ground Beetles) and are thusly dependent on maintaining a full-force running speed throughout their adult lives.

Pictures were taken on May 16, 2021 and May 19, 2022 with a Google Pixel 4. As a reminder, while this Big-headed Beetle may have large jaws and digging legs, it has only evolved traits which are analogous with those of Stag Beetles, and isn't a Stag Beetle itself. And as a result, it is an inaccuracy to try and distinguish male and female Big-headed Ground Beetles via their mandibles. However, and while anecdotal, it seems that males may have larger proportioned heads compared to females.
