To the Hon. E M Stanton Secretary of War

I take the liberty to address myself to your Honor, stating that my brother [underline] Samuel Peterson [/underline], coloured, has been drafted and served in Comp. H. Eight U. S. Regt. Infantry since 1863. He was wounded and taken prisoner at the battle of McAllister Florida, and was send from there to Andersonville as a prisoner, where he was kept from that time until the fourth of March last. He reached the Union lines on the 15th of March as a paroled prisoner and reached his home at Perth Amboy N. Jersey on the 18th last. All his expenses did fall upon me, being a servant myself. I have been employed for more that 12 years in the service of Mr. U. A. Murdock President of the Continental Bank N. Y. which gentleman advised me to address your Honor direct. I was obliged to hire a nurse for 58 days at the rate of $1.50 and board. The doctor's bill will be very heavy on me. So I do not know what to do to help myself. Several leading merchants in this city besides Mr. Murdock my employer and Colonel Cannon assure me that they are confident your Honor will do something in my behalf. In the last place I suggest that my brother [underline] Samuel Peterson [/underline] has never received more than two months pay since he entered the Service of the United States.
