Olmecoid / Proto-Maya Jade Figure Late Preclassic, circa 300 - 100 BC
Bowl (earthenware with slip paint) of the ancient Maya. Side C, shown here, depicts a seated human figure who is one of four on the bowl. The figures wear either black body-paint or black spots on the torso, iconography whose precise meaning is unknown, as is the significance of the gestures of the four. The bowl dates to ca. 550-850 CE (the Late Classic period of Maya civilization) and measures 16 cm (6.3 in) high x 16.5 cm (6.5 in) in diameter. From Campeche, Mexico, it is now in the collection of the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, MD, USA. Photo credit: Walters Art Museum.
