Hidden in the jungle - the Mayan ruins of Yaxchilan - Chiapas, Mexico (by Andy Weiss)
The ancient Mayan city was founded at least 400 years earlier than previously thought, according to the head of a team that is exploring cenotes.
Clues to the Mayan “terminal classic” collapse
Ancient Mayans, concentrated mainly in what is now called the Yucatan Peninsula, were among the world’s most advanced civilizations of their time. About 2000 BCE they began to domesticate such crops as maize, beans, squashes, and chili peppers. Mayas built some of the earliest cities, beginning about 750 BCE, which by 500 BCE boasted monumental architecture, complex societies, advanced astronomy, calendars, and mathematics.
But despite all of their accomplishments over thousands of years, the Mayan world crumbled in just a few hundred years. During the 9th century CE, the central Maya region suffered political collapse, abandonment of cities, the end of dynasties, and a northward shift in activity. Various theories point to warfare, overpopulation, environmental degradation, and drought.
New research, published in Science on Thursday, focuses on the drought and suggests, for the first time, how extreme it was. While analyzing sediment under Lake Chichancanab on the Yucatan Peninsula, scientists found a 50 percent decrease in annual precipitation over more than 100 years, from 800 to 1,000 A.D. At times, the study shows, the decrease was as much as 70 percent.
The drought was previously known, but this study is the first to quantify the rainfall, relative humidity and evaporation at that time. It's also the first to combine multiple elemental analyses and modeling to determine the climate record during the Mayan civilization demise.
The drought coincides with the beginning of the “terminal classic” period of the Mayan chronology. It also accompanied the European Medieval Warm Period, thought to have been caused by a decrease in volcanic ash in the atmosphere and an increase in solar activity. Previous studies have shown that the Mayans’ deforestation contributed to their downfall. Deforestation tends to decrease the amount of moisture and destabilize the soil.
The saga of the dramatic Mayan collapse brings to mind our own situation, as vast areas of the world suffer from high temperatures and drought. Sociopolitical research suggests that drought may cause war, famine and large human migrations. And many countries affected lack the resources to cope.

It’s hard to resist a headline like “Quebec teen may have discovered long lost Mayan city.” Alas, the story going viral is too good to be true, according to archaeological experts. The supposed lost pyramid? More likely an abandoned field.
This much is true: William Gadoury, now 15, won a contest to present his theory that Maya cities were correlated with constellations at a conference a few years ago. He happened to be next to a booth of the Canadian Space Agency and scientists there decided to help the kid out.
