As I walked down the streets in the city that brought me so many memories of a time where I was young, I felt empty. I didn’t belong here anymore, I didn’t belong anywhere. Deciding it was best to go home I turned around and went my way. I hurriedly walked into the place I've known as home for the past 19 years and backed a bag. I quickly wrote a note to those that may actually care, walked to my car, and drove.
I don’t remember how long I had been driving. I just knew that I now needed to put gas. I pulled over to the nearest gas station and did what I needed then got back on the road. This had to last, I only had 100 more dollars and I still don’t know where I’m gonna end up.
The sun was rising and I hadn't stopped driving. I needed to pee and eat something, perfect a restaurant I’ve never heard of. I parked and walked to the door.
“May I use the restroom?”
“As long as you don’t make a mess should be fine.”
I went and did my business before walking out. “Can I sit anywhere?’
“Yes darling, I’ll be right with you. There should be a menu on the table already.”
As I look around at the small city I’ve ended up in, I want to read each person and give them each a story that I’ll never really know.
“What can I get you honey?” she startled me and I jumped in my seat. “Well come on now you have no reason to be scared, I don’t bite.”
“Sorry, I was just lost in my thoughts. Can I just get bacon and eggs with sourdough, oh and a coffee.” she scribbled with her pen “Coming right out”.
I went back to looking out the window for a couple minutes and the waitress placed down my food. “Here you go sweetie, enjoy.” “Thank you.”
I caught up in my mind that I hadn’t noticed that the place started to fill up. There was now an ederly couple, a group of girls and a group of boys. I ignored how loud and obvious the girls were being over the boys and continued to eat.
Before I could leave the waitress from earlier stopped me. “Honey, you look lost, do you need some help?” I looked at her with wide eyes. “No thank you ma’am, I’m doing just fine.” She looked at me closely. “No you're not, why don’t you stay a little longer, I get off of work in an hour then we can talk.” She pushed towards the table I was sitting at.
For some reason I didn't. I didn’t try to disagree with her and listened. Once she clocked out she came to sit with me and we talked for a while.
“Now, where are you from?'' she looked at me as she poured coffee for the both of us. “C/N”
“That’s quite a ways from here, how long have you been driving.” I don't remember how long exactly, I don't even know what time it is. “I think since 11 o’clock last night.” she just looked at me “Do you know what city you're in?” I shook my head no,
She sipped her coffee for the first time and I dared not to speak. The silence stayed for a while longer, before she asked “Do you need a job or a place to stay.” I looked at her confusingly and her face didn’t falter.
“I don’t plan on being her much longer, I was just stopping for some food.”
“If that was really the case you wouldn’t have listened to me when i said to stay.” she started to stand and I was beginning to look confused “Let’s go home so you can sleep, we have work tomorrow.”
I was puzzled as she kept walking and once she reached the door she looked back at me “Well come on now your driving I took the bus here” I followed her and for some reason I let her get into my car, I let her tell me the directions of her home, I let myself get my bag and walk into her house.
“This will be your room, that's your uniform and the showers down the hall, you're welcome to anything and I’ll wake you up in the morning, good night honey.”
I sat there a little baffled and decided to shower, once I got out I noticed her bedroom light was off and I could hear soft breathing. I went back to what was now my room and laid there for a while. I left the window open and could hear the wind blowing, it was cool. The moon was big and bright. My surroundings made me feel calm. Maybe I will stay here was my last thought as I drifted to sleep.
