If you read the article in my last post, you maybe came away feeling that you needed to save the tigers, tigers of course being clothing brands that suddenly had to contend with shuttered stores, suffering sales, and an even bleaker future with 10 million Americans and counting out of work with no disposable income. You perhaps felt you had a moral imperative to keep those places going. Intro HuffPo to say not so fast!
In “Why You Shouldn't Order Nonessential Packages During The Coronavirus Pandemic,” doctors discuss the part of the ordering process that happens between paying and receiving - the part where humans sort, pack, ship, and deliver our things that we like to pretend doesn’t exist. The piece focuses on health of the people involved in that process and doesn’t even mention the economy or their continued employment, something of the opposite approach the US administration took.
Even if ordering nothing for six weeks is impractical for you, the crux of this article is the same as the NYTimes piece - be thoughtful about what you’re supporting with your dollars. You can order from Amazon and tacitly endorse their lack of protections for workers and firing of strike leaders, or you can order from a smaller business that spells out on their home page what they’re doing to keep their employees safe. It might take a little longer to figure out alternate places to buy things but to be quite frank, what else have you got going on right now?
