LET’S LEAVE HIM ALONE IN THE STUDIO, SEE WHAT HAPPENS #2. A favorite story which if you know me you’ll probably hear me tell again and may have heard already: in the late 70s, the family of @gustofhumor invited me along for a week at @indiana.beach where on the midway was a haunted ride where you sat in a little car and got pulled through this purportedly scary experience but the “monsters” were so cheesy and bad they were laughable, and we did laugh. Googly eyes and blacklight-painted homemade things would wiggle at you as the car trundled mechanically through doors into different rooms and you felt your contempt and teenage superiority rising and rising until you came into what seemed to be the final room with its final glowy tacky attempt to frighten and you could hear the crowd outside and you were so ready to be out in the sun rolling your eyes when suddenly you burst through a set of doors into a well-lit room with a realistic bus-front with headlights and a realistic horn blaring and the clanky car you were riding in pulled you straight and fast directly at the bus bumper and you were certain you were dead. So realistic. Exactly like being killed by a bus. Effectively terrifying. The whole first part was a psych-out set-up for that bus. And the bus, metaphorically, is “Maybe I’m Amazed” on this album. It’s the first solo album after the Beatles broke up and seems half-done. Some songs are nice but you’re not ready when, second-to-last song @paulmccartney throws the sucker punch of one of the 20th century’s great songs. There’s “Junk,” a pretty melody and unexpected chords; “Teddy Boy” is cute, “Every Night” “Man We Was Lonely” and “That Would Be Something” are all the start of good songs, it feels like, but tossed off, unfinished-feeling. Some music on here is wordless noodling not better than a jam session at any bar. Then pow, everything about “Maybe I’m Amazed” is so brilliant. I wonder if Lennon felt like it was a big bus bumper (if he even tried to listen to this album). #mccartney #vinyl #maybeimamazed #yesiguessiam #vinylcollection #vinyladdict #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvDWSDsHgLg/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=qn01f2wpsuvw
