I’m going to major in chemistry so I’m more into the concrete sciences where observations are made and data is collected and there’s virtually no gray areas or interpretations, but there is one cool thing about social sciences I’m noticing. Just like how physicists are trying to find that single unifying equation that explains everything in the universe, social scientists are definitely trying to find a single unifying theory to explain the human condition. I don’t know how I feel that some theories are flat out tossed away by some people because you really need all of them to see the bigger picture just like physicists need every little equation to create the single one. I’m only 19 so I know that obviously this has been talked about already and that there is probably a field or group of people attempting to do this, or just that it’s common sense, but I do still hear about how some people subjectively decide to practice one theory over another and that just baffles me. You really need to be contextual about things and consider all of your options. There is a certain level of subjectivity allowed in science, but for the most part, but to make meaningful connections and to make progress, you need to retain your objectivity to see things for what they really are.
