“The horse is dead. I suppose you can go back to London.”
tuesday, unexpectedly
Rain started puttering down the second Tom left his house, and by the time he'd reached the main road, it was falling steadily. It didn't hinder his plans, however; if anything, it fueled him. He accelerate dangerously as the rain continued and threatened to flood the poorly constructed dirt path.
"Fuck it," he muttered to the empty seat next to him. "Fuck it." Almost automatically, he popped open the silver cigarette case and placed one between his teeth, igniting it using the engraved lighter Arthur had given him as a token of appreciation some time ago, for what, Tom couldn't be bothered to remember.Cool as he was under pressure, he couldn't help but pull a face as he narrowly avoided swerving out of control, and it was only now that Tom entertained the idea that maybe driving in this weather was less than ideal. He'd barely considered it for a moment, however, when a heavy pang in his chest forced him on even more quickly than before. He had to see her tonight. She was the only one in his world that truly understood what he felt. What he had been going through for several months. What he needed.
If he hadn't known the way by heart now, Tom might never have made it to her house alive (though perhaps that wouldn't have been so bad). As it was, he thought he might have blacked out for some of the journey; he couldn't altogether remember parts of it, hard as he tried. It hardly mattered now, as he pulled into her long drive, the rain still pounding his car with no sign of letting up.
He barely gave himself enough time to put the car in park and turn the engine off before he was out of the door and on his way to her front door. It was only when he great the great wooden structures that the hour of his unexpected arrival may be inappropriate. He drew his pocket watch from his coat and checked it: too dark to see. Ah, well. He was sure she'd be awake anyway. She was young, and the youth of today hardly slept. He'd come all this way. It would be more pointless for him to turn around than anything else.
