“Very carefully,” she looked down at the tips of his shoes and back up to his eyes, imploring him to take the step she could sense he’s holding back on.

Michael does not fidget under her gaze, he does not move a muscle. No part of him is tense, and all of him shows this. Completely relaxed. “You know what I find very interesting, Miss Carleton?” he licks his lips, “You didn’t care to ask how Grace’s Secret died.”

“Perhaps I might have to,” she raised her chin as well, taking note of the upward curve of his lip, “if nobody else will.”

She pinched the inside of her cheek between her teeth and met his eyes with unfaltering confidence.

Michael hums, but has no other verbal response for the time being. He looks over her with curiosity. He knows better than to step closer to her, he doesn’t plan on overstepping boundaries in any way. This is a simple conversation. “How are you going to do that?”

She took a stride toward him, snapping her toe down against the wooden floorboards to compensate for her lack of a heel to click. The flat soles of her boots left her standing level with his chin.

“The line between ‘want to’ and 'have to’ is very thin,” she started, her lips pursing and her gaze drawing up to meet his, then down once more, as her way of implementing some sort of subtle intimidation tactic, “I know where to draw that line, Michael. Do you?”

If she attempting to intimidate Michael, she does not know him well. Michael, who is one of the few people willing to say no to Tommy. Michael just raises his chin and blinks at her.

“I don’t know, Miss Carleton. Perhaps you can teach me.” there’s a faint smirk on his face.

may-carleton:

“Would it surprise you to learn that I do?” Her hands found their way into the deep pockets of her overcoat, and she began to fumble with a pendant she had been carrying around throughout the course of her stay.

Surprise is probably a very strong word. Eyes flicker over her, studying. “We do what we have to.” he’s careful of what he says, knowing that anything said to her can be told to Tommy. The last thing he wanted was to be out of line in anyway way.

may-carleton:

“I suppose I can, yes,” May quirked a brow at Michael, only lightly scorned by his incredible oversimplification of her agenda in Birmingham, “but I’ve got some other things to take care of first.”

Ah, quite a few people are well aware of Miss Carleton’s agendas, but that was not for Michael to comment on. “You have other business here?”

H E takes it with a little nod in thanks, slumps into the seat in front of Michael’s desk, letting out a sigh, “ Feels like the whole world’s trying to kill me . Woke up with a FUCKING STONE through my window, so that was good . “

He raises his brows, “ And what about you, ay ? How come you look PLEASED AS PUNCH ? “ He can’t help smiling himself though, something about Michael’s smile contagious .

Ah, Michael smiles crookedly and relaxes back into his seat. That’s probably a fair assumption. He’s pretty sure those that don’t want to be them want to kill them (or at least want them to die).

“No stones have come through my window, if that’s what you’re askin’.” he inhales, “Met a lady last night.”

She cant help but smile crookedly at the silent cheers, nodding her head once to the quiet ‘celebration’. “ I’m a pretty impressive person, so I don’t think it’d be an issue on impressing people. ”

“Mm?” he hums as he drinks, licking his lips as the cup is set down. “Really now?” a hand gestures calmly at her, as if offering her the floor. “Go ahead. Impress me.”

“Oh?” She had heard a few rumors before her trip about the violence in the area, but didn’t pay too much mind to it because it wasn’t like there wasn’t dispute in the States. But how he said it deepened her curiosity and with God willing he would indulge her a little.

Instead of verbally responding, Michael raises his eyebrows and nods. A silent yeah, really. If she wants specific details she’ll have to ask, he isn’t going to just spill all of their secrets for no reason.

Evelyn hadn’t expected the other to speak to her first. In fact, she was trying to not be noticed by him at all. To keep quiet in the shadows where she’s accustomed to. She knows who the younger man is. A cousin to the Shelby’s, he works for them. Today was supposed to be a day of learning the most she can about him. Seems he isn’t one for children.

“Neither do I.” but that’s not the point. Michael’s head is killing him from staying up all night to finish off some paperwork, and now he has to deal with this. Though normally such a calm person, he doesn’t feel too calm.

It looks like Isaiah has had a bad day. In that case, why is there a slight smile on Michael’s face? “Cigar?” he offers one out, “Who tried to kill you today?”

“At what point can someone remain respectable while they smack a child?” the kid was screaming and crying all because their mother was refusing to buy them ice cream. It’s stomping its foot and sitting on the floor and... usually Michael could ignore it, but he has a fucking headache.

A funeral. How lovely. Why else would someone willingly come here from so far away? Michael shrugs, a slick movement that contradicts the certainty on his face. “Don’t get many Americans around here. They hear about what goes on and... stay away.” there’s a very faint smile on his lips.
