Actually, the reason why I love angsty May-December romance novels is because when I was 19 I gave one of my OCs an older love interest and they had an initially platonic paternal/mentor-ish relationship that dragged on for years in a tragic unrequited love kind of situation (because of their ages and working relationship) and over ten years later watching Victoria is almost like watching a victorian era AU fic of them.
I am a simple girl of simple pleasures and all I ask of a May/December romance novel is for the May to at least be in their 20s and the December to at least be in their late 30s, yet I am still constantly disrespected by romance authors whom only bring me novels where the heroine is 18 and the hero isn’t even 30 yet.
I have decided that (at least part of) the appeal of May/December romance novels is that unique Millenial Mess™ feel where you don’t really feel like a Real Adult™ and you just want an actual Real Adult™ to take you under their wing and show you how it’s done and (despite all evidence to the contrary) affirm you as an adult. Also you get to have sex with them.
