Running into the North Sea
May dip is a tradition in St Andrews and is one I was less interested in participating in. There is nothing about running into the North Sea at 5 am in the morning that sounds appealing or logical. Yet, and maybe even precisely for the illogical, irrational, and silly nature of it, it was one of the most fun things I have done.
The beach was dotted with a couple of bonfires and groups of people looking cold and apprehensive. However drunk people were, the fresh air and thought of running into the sea was rather sobering. I had a bag with me with as many layers as would fit (including a hairdryer and a hot water bottle). We were ready. We just needed someone to give the signal. I’m not sure who it was, but as soon as people started taking their clothes off, I knew it was time to dance!
After spending the weekend dreading the thought of it, of course I ended up going in twice. And that is one thing I learnt about myself today, sometimes its good to stay curious about yourself. Maybe you don’t actually know what you are going to like and what you are not. Who know’s maybe I’ll be running into the sea again early in the morning, though next time at least with a wetsuit.
Everything is better with a dip. Pizza. Chicken nuggets. Mozzarella sticks. The crack of dawn on May 1st. #MayDip (at East Sands)
#april30th : thank you so much to everyone who stuck through this April with me. This has probably been my most ambitious #aprildoodles this year (even with my more serious exams) and I've been bowled over by all the lovely feedback I've been getting from everyone. You guys are all amazing :) Going to buckle down with some revision (after running into the North Sea - #maydip ) so there'll not be many drawings for the next few weeks but I'll get back to it for this summer.
