The victims of the tornados last night on 10/10/2021 will need our help and charity the next couple weeks. Please keep a look out for donations, fundraisers, and volunteering needed. I will try to stay up to date on GoFundMes from that area.
Kentucky and Illinois were hit hard along with other southern states and they need your support. Hundreds of people potentially died and are injured.
Haunting video of downtown Mayfield, KY after it was hit by a tornado last night, 12/10/21. I spent most of my adolescence in this area. I went to school in this town for six years. I haven't lived here since 2010, but the images coming out of Mayfield hurt my heart horribly. My chest aches every time I watch this video, but it really is incredible. So much of this town is just gone.
Before and after of the candle factory, one of the largest employers in Mayfield. There were about 110 employees working when the tornado sirens went off. 40 people have been recovered, as of posting (the evening of 12/11, almost 24 hours later). If you're up to it, I recommend this article about the disaster at the candle factory. Be warned though, it's a pretty upsetting read. It also might be blocked by a paywall, depending if you've been reading other WaPo articles. 🙄
We're still waiting on surveys, but this tornado was at least an EF4, if not a 5. The amount of damage is unbelievable. Cars crumpled like cans, a 500,000 gallon water tower collapsed like a squashed spider, bark ripped off living trees.
The Graves County Courthouse is among the buildings destroyed. Several other towns in Kentucky were hit hard, including the city I now live in, but from what I've seen it appears that Mayfield got the worst of it. Please keep them, and the rest of the people affected by these storms in your thoughts. We're beginning the difficult process of grieving and rebuilding.

USA Natural Disaster Alerts Winter 2021-2022
On the 10th of December, 2021 a strong winter storm turned into several tornadoes that hit Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The storm hit in the middle of the night and caused severe devastation to several communities and leaving several dead or injured.
I have linked some tornado disaster safety, preparations, tips, and evacuation spaces if you are living in the area and need somewhere to go. I have also linked several different organizations and places to donate as well as places you can volunteer in those disaster zones.
If anyone has any additional information you know or feel might be helpful please feel free to message me about it or reblog with the information and I will do my best to update this post as much as possible. Thank you.
I’m monitoring the situation from the tornado last night. My thoughts are with those in Mayfield, Kentucky and Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee. If anyone has any public charities or personal donation funds for the victims they’d like to signal boost, let me know. My heart goes out to you all in this tragic and sensitive time.

WESTERN KENTUCKY TORNADO RELIEF FUND

I want to make this it’s own post. My hometown was almost completely demolished by the tornado last night. They are desperately needing help. If anyone has the means to donate I would really appreciate it. Even if you aren’t able to donate sharing this around would do a world of good as well. Thank you so much.

The Riverland’s podcast wishes to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to those who lost loved ones in the collapse of the Amazon distribution warehouse in Pontoon Beach, Illinois; Monette Manor nursing home in Monette Arkansas, to the three Tennesseans lost in Lake and Obion County TN; and to the citizens of Mayfield Kentucky -- where 50-100 lives were lost and news is reporting the town was completely decimated. There is never a good time for this to happen. Having this happen right around the Holidays makes this so much worse.
The Riverlands are a really hard place to live sometimes. The way we get through- is how we have always gotten through-- by helping and caring for our neighbors the best that we can.
