I asked my economics teacher this question once before. The thing is, when a loan (some) is taken, it wasn't done using real solid cash but rather credits (esp when it involves huge amount). So when a business fail and stuff, that "money" is practically gone a.k.a you lose "future money" (potential monetary gain), in that sense, before you have the money to pay that loan, you just end up with no money at all, while the interest for the loans still count. So you go into a debt.
