KJAS plays with Mayil Scarves 👑 – A Review w/ Pictures

My favourite thing about Mayil Scarves is the gorgeous colours and patterns the store has. Madavi Oliver is the woman behind it all who carefully selects each fabric in India and designs each scarf. I love the zari dots of gold on the aqua scarf. Her upbringing amongst colours and family history in working with silk has meant she has a natural eye for what really works.
The scarves are not hand rolled, but they’re still turned up and stitched so that the raw edges don’t fray. The stitching is immaculate, and according to Madavi’s profile on Etsy the scarves are finished by women from her rural village. In an age where people can’t get enough of fast mass produced cheap fashion, it’s refreshing to hold these simple scarves that are the product of many loving hands working on them.
Whether it be wrapping around a handbag’s handles or cinching in your waist, they are an easy thickness to work with and light to carry in your bag as an emergency scarf. I particularly love this crushed organza scarf which is a salmony red with threads of gold that gives it a rusty metallic sheen. It’s a finely pleated one, which makes the texture very coarse and slightly itchy against the skin, but also means the threads of gold sparkle more because they’re exposed to light at different angles. I love using it as a belt over a skirt.
Their scarves are not like the luxury scarves I previously reviewed, but rather affordable pops of colour you aren’t afraid to wear everyday. The fabrics are mostly quite sheer and filmy (chiffon, thin silks) so not the solid opaque heavy silk I would use for tying tops, but this makes them ideal for being a small lightweight addition to any outfit. Whether it be wrapping around a handbag’s handles or cinching in your waist, because they aren’t so thick they are easy to work with and light to carry in your bag as an emergency scarf.
Overall, the black and cream flower silk scarf and the crushed organza are my absolute favourites. And now I have another five colourful versatile scarves to add to my collection! My favourite things about the scarves they do are the colours/patterns and the less extravagant pricing making it accessible to anyone.
