10 Super Tech Startups in Philly!
Mayor Nutter Hears from Student Interns about Start-Ups in Philadelphia (Philly StartUp Scholars) Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania and Campus Philly created the Philly StartUp Scholars student intern program, funded by the City of Philadelphia’s StartUp PHL program PHILADELPHIA, PA – Yesterday, Mayor Michael A. Nutter met with college student interns and their host companies to hear about their experience as part of the Philly StartUp Scholars program. Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/SEP) and Campus Philly created Philly StartUp Scholars, funded in part by the City of Philadelphia’s StartUp PHL program. “We are proud of the success of the Philly StartUp Scholars program, which is providing ten students from area colleges and universities with real-world experience in some of the growing technology companies in Ben Franklin’s portfolio,” said RoseAnn B. Rosenthal, President & CEO of Ben Franklin. “At the same time, the companies benefit from the skills, energy and resources the students provide, and the region has a better opportunity to retain young talent.” she added. Philly StartUp Scholars placed student interns from Haverford College, Penn State University, The University of Pennsylvania and Temple University. Ben Franklin portfolio company hosts include AgileSwitch, Grassroots Unwired, RealWinWin and Viridity Energy. "Connecting our world-class universities and students with the startup community in Philadelphia is a key priority of StartUp PHL, which is why we're so excited about the Ben Franklin Technology Partners/Campus Philly internship program," said Mayor Michael A. Nutter. “This was a great opportunity to hear from our future workforce about how we can support start-ups in Philadelphia,” he added. “We know that students with paid internships are more likely to stay in Philadelphia after they graduate,” said Deborah Diamond, Ph.D., President of Campus Philly. “This program allows us to build awareness among students that the start-up sector is strong and growing in Philadelphia and gets them to think about that as a career path,” she added. The Philly StartUp Scholars builds upon Ben Franklin’s successful Talent Connect internship program that Ben Franklin piloted with Swarthmore College in 2012 and 2013. Twelve students interned at Ben Franklin and portfolio companies, receiving an extensive entrepreneurial education. Campus Philly works hand-in-hand with regional career service offices to connect college students to local employers for jobs and internships. In 2012, Campus Philly piloted programs for students to connect to the start-up ecosystem in Philadelphia, including the Campus Philly Crawl: Tech Start-Ups and Mobile Mondays Lightning Lessons for college students. Philly StartUp Scholars provides funding to students who complete the 10 week company internship. The students serve the companies in a variety of capacities, including work in the investment, marketing, engineering, and social media/communication realms.
