Anabelle thought of herself as awfully plain. If not plain, very ordinary. If she was not the daughter of the Muse mayor, she'd be practically ignored by everybody. It wasn't as if she was particularly beautiful or smart or clever; she was just good enough.
She wasn't used to attention, she wasn't used to being seen as something great, so it made her uneasy when Viktor would ask her how her day was and it wouldn't matter what she would say because he'd just look at her with that faraway look as if she was the world's greatest gift.
When she mentioned this, he would say, "I just like listening to your voice. It's relaxing. Like music." Anabelle was sure he was lying because she's been told that her voice was almost as deep as a male's and she wasn't sure how that could be soothing at all but Viktor wouldn't stand for it.
Sometimes she wondered if he actually listened to what she said or was just nodding, only hearing her voice but Viktor will answer to her questions and give her the answers she need, whether to get through the day or finish paperwork, it was something she appreciated and loved.
For some reason at dinner, he seemed more out of it. Quieter. Almost nervous and Anabelle watched him sip his red wine, trying to think of what might've been wrong. Did she say something? Was something about to happen?
When he downed the drink, he caught her staring. He licked his lips and smiled. "Has my good looks enraptured you, Ana?"
She shook her head, chuckling slightly. "No...I mean, you just, you seem different today. Did something happen?"
Viktor raised an eyebrow innocently. "I'm always fine, Ana. You know that."
His voice wavered slightly but Ana just thought it was a trick of her imagination and just shook her head again. "I-Never mind."
"Want to go back?" He asked, tilting his head towards the door.
She nodded, having quite enough of the restaurant and was excited to just kick back and snuggle up against him near the fireplace. He stood up and walked over to her side. Anabelle expecting him to lift her up from her seat, took his hand but was only found confused when he knelt down.
"Viktor?"
He smiled up towards her (the first time he's ever had to look up) and just caressed her hand with his thumb. Then, in his back pocket, he took out a small case and opened it to find a ring.
It wasn't a very expensive or flashy ring, three diamonds lined side by side on the silver band.
"Ana...no, Anabelle, I had no family when I met you. I had no home to speak of and I have forgotten what was love if only a gamble for pain and despair. I - I was never good enough for you. You were always so out of reach, so much smarter, so much...better than I was. I know I don't deserve you and, it's a miracle but..."
Her face was wet, dripped with flowing tears that she couldn't stop even if she tried.
"I want you. I will do anything in the world to just have you, to have you belong to me. No, so we can belong to each other. 'Cause I know, I know that I just want to wake up to you every day and if I lose you, watch you with another man, that every day I will die a little more inside. All these years, I know that all I ever wanted was family. Something to call home. You're my home, Anabelle. Something I will cherish until the ends of time if you only let me. If you only say yes. Only if you would care to be mine."
"Ah, you really are cute when you're concentrating. You get this small crease right..." He examined the woman's face before poking a spot in her forehead, "Here. And, your eyebrows scrunch together and you have that small upturn of your lips along here..."
