In your comics (which are very cute and have great use of blacks n grays!) there is always a person that seems to be Sita's mentor that talks to her about the tribe and things like why she is so different than everyone else, but who exactly are they? the tags don't mention a name or why in that one comic they looked so freaked out or was having an emotional break down in front of (it looks like) Sita. I was just wondering and curious, pfft also really love this account and characters on it hah
oh yes! that’s Mira. i always call her Sita’s mom but you’re right, mentor is a better term for her. i’ve kind of been secretive about her half because she’s a backstory character, half because i’m always changing my mind about her canon, but i’ll explain her here because. why not!
so as we know, everyone in this desert tribe are shapeshifters. i dont know if i’ve ever mentioned or implied it, but the tribe always has one more-evolved individual. their forms are a lot more powerful– they have something of a stronger aura with Desta and even just physically: they have fangs and claws that are much more prominent than your standard shifter. Desta employed this dynamic to give herself a sort of secret weapon pawn on earth.
when Sita began maturing she started showing signs of harboring this kind of form, and Mira took to her because, well, Mira herself is one of these evolved individuals.
that’s everything concrete about Mira. there are a lot of other things that i’m constantly contemplating with her though, these are things i have up in the air:
Mira is very seasoned, i reckon she’s centuries and centuries old, and i consider having her be one of the original shapeshifters Desta made (meaning she has been around since the beginning of the new era Desta created). this way, Mira would be the only evolved-shifter to have existed so far, and therefore would be incredibly interested in why suddenly Sita is born this way too.
[sidenote, i haven’t even figured out how shifters are born yet fkljgdf. they don’t procreate, and ive gone back and forth from all sorts of ideas from something as absurd as them just crawling out of the sand to lightning strikes hitting rocks shaping their form and giving them life. evidently i have a lot to do on that front pfft]
i considered having this narrative as well because i think Sita’s creation can be really unnerving to Mira. Mira would have essentially existed from the beginning of time and is the tribe’s trump card. suddenly another one is born, upsetting the balance (making the tribe too powerful vs the rest of the world? vs desta herself?). i think Mira can take this as a kind of omen: as a desert shifter, she is a devout follower of Desta, who created them all. and as a follower of such, she recognizes Desta’s true role, which is that of being the god of balance, rather than the ‘god of destruction,’ which is just what the humans think Desta to be.
i think this would give Mira a complex relationship with Sita. Mira must be very maternal, having governed a tribe from the beginning of time and probably is especially so with Sita as they are the same. but why are they the same? does it mean Mira’s time is over? (spoiler alert……. yea) i also think this would put even more weight on Sita’s survivor guilt: she could think her being born upset the balance and forced the universe to get rid of one of these evolved-shifters, hence resulting in the massacre she escaped.
it kind of sucks that i have Mira as a posthumous character in my story because i’ve clearly thought a lot about her and therefore have gotten attached, but that’s just how it be sometimes… if i ever actually wrote and completed Sita’s story i’d probably try to do a prequel that centered on Mira.
