Few cars can draw a crowd quite like a #MazdaAZ1 - and it’s obvious why - it’s a mid-engined, gullwing-doored supercoupe in an absurdly tiny package. Ever since they became eligible for import to the U.S. in 2017 (thanks to the 25 year rule) they’ve been all over car websites here and generating new interest. This lovely AZ-1 was brought in by Dylan Xu just a couple of months ago, and he kindly shared it with an assembled group of friendly Kei enthusiasts at yesterday’s excellent @sodo_moto open house (thanks Adam!). - The AZ-1 is over the top in every way - it even says “Midship DOHC Turbo Exciting Micro Coupe” on the side - and was a product of exuberance of late 80s #Japan - the first concept car version, the AZ-550, premiered at the 1989 Tokyo show in three forms - the Type A, which made it to production, the Type B, which looked a little like a shrunken Panther Solo, and the Type C which looked like a shrunken Group C racer. - The car was a partial collab with Suzuki, who provided the engine - 64hp #Turbo F6A inline triple. 64hp isn’t much but in the AZ-1 weighs only about 1,600 lbs., so it makes for a fun drive. It’s tiny insie as you’d expect, but not too much smaller than a Fiat X1/9, as I learned in person yesterday. Later, there was also a (very rare) Suzuki version called the Cara. Mazda’s Toshiko Hirai guided the styling of the AZ concepts, picking up on work done on earlier Suzuki concepts by Tatsumi Fukanaga. - #Autozam was created in the late 80s as a Mazda companion sales channel (along with Eunos and ɛ̃fini, neither of which survived the 90s) selling a variety of mostly economy-oriented versions of Mazdas and Suzukis; and also distributing Lancias in Japan. It was Autozam that would sell the AZ-1, thought it took a long time to refine the structure of the car - the exterior panels were mostly plastic around a rigid steel skeleton - Lotus-esque. - Like most of the other #Kei sports cars, by the time the AZ-1 got to market in September of #1992, the Japanese asset bubble had burst and Japan was in a deep recession - so it never sold in big numbers. A disappointment, because it looks great and it’s fun to drive. Thanks for sharing Dylan! (at SODO-Moto) https://www.instagram.com/p/BoE9FRog38R/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1y1zzkcq99trb
