Hi GP! Is there any Phantom who just drops the cape in the title song without making any grand gesture?
I feel like the way the cape is attached almost necessitates a grand gesture (it uses backpack straps, so a lot of actors will sort of fling it out, partly to make it easier to get off, partly so they don’t look like they’re just shrugging it off, which can ruin the whole “sexy suaveness” appeal of the Phantom).
Anyway, I think this is a question best answered using my comparison video of that scene! I haven’t watched through all of it, but I did think John Owen-Jones and Greg Mills were a bit lackadaisical with their cape twirling. Franc D’Ambrosio literally flinging it over his head also made me snort. Oh well, we can’t all be like Brad Little:
A blonde Leroux-style Christine surprising unmasked Kerik by kissing him (because Kerik deserves some lovin')
Surprise Smooch! 😆
Question of curiosity:
When did you first discover Poto and what was your initial reaction?
Thanks for the ask @maze-zen! 😊
My first exposure to POTO (as far as I can remember) was seeing the Charles Dance/Cherik 1990 miniseries on TV when I was in elementary school. I remember drawing a picture of Erik leading Christine up to the roof with his cape and sword but not much else 😂 It must have made a big impression on me, though, because a few years later my brother got to see the ALW musical on a school band trip and I was SUPER JELLY to the point that my parents planned a family trip to Toronto for me to see the show (in 1996). That’s when the POTO love/obsession really kicked in and I was completely hooked 😍
How about you? I always love hearing how phans came to love POTO ❤️
xoxo
Question of curiosity:
When did you first discover Poto and what was your initial reaction?
Oh, wow, that’s a throwback! I was a kid in the mid 90s when my parents saw the production (both US tour and Toronto, I believe). My mom fell in love with it, and she’d play the highlights CD at home, so I began to fall in love with it alongside her. (It stuns me, looking back, because she’s never really shown that kind of fondness for musical theater, or for any music in general, otherwise.) She rented the 1943 film for us to watch together, and she took me to my first Phantom performance, in Toronto.
I don’t think I fully understood the story or its themes that young. I remember repeatedly asking her why Claude Rains’ Phantom was so obsessed with making Christine sing until finally she said, “Because he loves her!” and I had this oh moment. (It’s an oversimplification, but you do what you can to appease a pestering kid, I guess).
I think it must have been the music that initially drew me in: the overture and that pre-“Wishing” violin solo, and the trio of Crawford, Brightman, and Barton in the graveyard. They gave me chills every time I heard them, and sometimes still do. I will never forget the first time I watched that chandelier go up as the organ rocked the theater.
Happy belated birthday! I hope you had a great day ❤️🎉💐🎈🎂
Thank you!!! I did as much as I could regarding the current circumstances, but it was nice and cozy, so I can’t complain ;P.
Hi! I was wondering why you aren't allowing Pharoga for your contest, but still allow E/R (and E/OC I guess?) that's more popular on AO3 than Pharoga. Is there a specific reason for that?
You’re absolutely right and I’m going to be honest and say that I genuinely did not even *know* E/R was the more popular on AO3 until you mentioned it. I should have checked and I didn’t and that’s on me.
Pharoga is now allowed, and thank you for bringing it to my attention!
To @maze-zen
HAPPY PHANDOM VALENTINE’S DAY!! <3
