New official pictures of Anna Zavelson as Christine Daaé.
Hello GP! I recently saw Phantom in London and noticed Anna has these pink Edwardian-style heels with her Star Princess costume instead of the silver boots. Is this new (maybe temporary?) or has this change been around for some time?
It's new for the West End revival, as I believe every Christine before then has had the boots, not heels.
In terms of precedence, we have definitely seen the heels before in the restaged UK and US tours, and something like them appears to have been used in the most recent UK tour that ended after only one stop due to the COVID pandemic and the current US tour. (I would also not be surprised if the heels were inspired by or even drawn from these.) But in terms of things like this appearing in an actual replica(-ish) production, there is one other time it happened, to Rachel Zatcoff in the Broadway production, who got dark blue shoes and apparently used them her entire run. I don't know if anyone really knows the reason for this, perhaps they were temporary and her run was too short for her to get the boots.
Which leads us to whether Anna Zavelson will keep these, and again, I am not certain. Her predecessor, Beatrice Penny-Toure, was also a temporary Christine and received the silver boots, but she had also had an understudy run previously in the production, so she may have had a stock of old costumes, including the boots, that the costumers could pull from. With Anna Zavelson, it may be a temporary measure because they could not get boots for her, for whatever reason, or it could be that they will not bother with making any boots at all, since her run is for a limited time only. Only time will tell!
Which of the "replicas" (us tour, london, korea, world tour) do you think best captures the rich and moody late 19th century aesthetic?
Japan. :P
To be honest, whether it's because of lighting differences or better cameras (bootleg and promo video/photos), none of the replica productions really feel like they capture that dark, moody atmosphere of earlier productions - they all feel so bright. But I guess if I had to choose, then maybe Japan, Korea, and the World Tour. The US Tour looks all right in terms of lighting (I'll check back after August when I've seen it live), whereas the West End has felt too bright for a while now.

Claire Leyden is taking over as the principal Christine in pulse 6 🥰
Hi Celina, do you have a comparison video/post of how the Masquerade dance break has evolved throughout the years (specifically Raoul's dancing)? I remember watching an old video from Japan and he danced quite a bit (more so than Raouls these days).
Yeah, I think I've made a couple and maybe reblogged another. I also wrote a post about it which links to various gifsets (or videos if I was feeling lazy), which you can read here!
It should be said that the reason Japanese Raouls (and Christines!) dance more is because Japan stuck to the original dance choreography up until 2020, when they updated to be more in line with Broadway blocking as it was pre-COVID. This not only meant more dancing for Raoul but also more for Christine, in scenes beyond 'Masquerade', such as in Hannibal where she did the full dance.

finally got around to sharing this 🙈
Edward Salles (Phantom), Lina de la Peña (Christine), Luis Anduaga (Raoul), Tomás Castellanos (cover André), Andrés Pichardo (Firmin), Cristina Nakad (Carlotta), Jonathan Rubén (Piangi), Alicia Paola (Madame Giry), Emily Valdés (Meg)
if trading, please list as for-a-lifetime’s master
pretty chatty audience, so be warned. most notably during the final lair when a shirtless raoul enters the scene, which the ladies behind us were pretty stoked about

despite not being the original, i was still very impressed by and very happy with this production! most of the ideas were pretty fun, even if tonally sometimes i was a little confused lol. although i found the phantom to be dull in terms of acting, the rest of the cast is INSANE and vocally there are no duds. lina and luis are an especially great raoulstine duo 🥰

Hi! Do you have audio of the concert version of Phantom that was done in French in Quebec in early 2020? Anne-Marine Suire (finally) was Christine, Hugo Laporte was Le Fantôme, and Michaël Girard was Raoul. Thanks!
Nope, I've yet to see any recording of that pop up beyond, like, some promo or proshot clips. (Also, if you want to see what I have without asking and waiting for a response, here's my trading site! The Find function is your friend here.)
It should be mentioned that that concert happened twice, once in 2018 and another time in 2020. I bring this up because someone on Tumblr was going to see the 2018 concert and get audio of it, but they promptly disappeared from Tumblr right after the concert happened, so I guess nothing came out of that. Ah well.
Do you know the alt schedule for the spanish tour?
According to this very old Instagram post from Judith Tobella, she does Tuesday and Wednesday shows, but there's a pretty good possibility that's changed. I am very much not up to date on the Spanish tour and don't really have much clue where to search up info, so I'm sure someone else will have more info in the comments!
EDIT: An ask from an anonymous user:
I spoke to Judith Tobella and can confirm she and Manu are doing Wednesday and Sunday evening shows for now (except for July 9, which is a Thursday). I only checked for the dates in Malaga though so this is subject to change
What are your thoughts on the projections used in the current US Tour? Does it mesh well with the physical sets or it's giving RAH?
Keeping in mind that I have not yet seen the show live (you'll have to wait until the end of August for that) and have only seen bootlegs - I never even noticed there were projections until I read that they were using them and actively tried looking for them. So that's probably a good indication of how noticeable they were to me. You are free to take that with a grain of salt, as I am reliant on bootlegs right now, but from the comments I have seen on it, most other fans also seem to think that it's well integrated and does not detract from the experience at all. Which is a big improvement on the RAH projections, which I did feel were too big, too bright, and only emphasized how empty the rest of the stage was, even if I understood the need for them.
