Mazy Star - Fade Into You (1994)
My dad just pulled these out and I’m gonna lose it
Last week Spellling released her second LP, Mazy Star, and it’s one of the year’s most versatile, and consistently mesmerizing records that I’ve heard so far. Standout track “Under the Sun” opens to a lumbering four on the floor groove with neon-hued synths both helping establish the rhythm and take lead. Before long strings sweep in alongside the synths and help flesh out what already sounds like a classic melody. The song wanders off into a spacier midsection with the synths seemingly firing off in random directions buoyed by her hypnotic falsetto and steady percussion. A high-pitched synth takes the lead once more and we’re led into a movement that sounds reminiscent of Carpenter-esque horror scores before bubbly organ chords lead us back to the initial melody. Tia Cabral seems content to let her gorgeous instrumental do most of the heavy lifting here, but when her voice does peak out from beneath the synths her radiant tone perfectly complements the arrangements without impeding their progression. Her restraint pays off tremendously, and helps render “Under the Sun” her most rewarding song to date on an album that’s much better than any breakout record needs to be.
