summary: nora gives birth and nick holds their little one for the first time.
exhausted wouldn’t even begin to describe how nora felt after thirteen hours of labor and a panicked, anxious husband who would not stop telling jokes no matter how much she begged him to do anything else. even now, despite the fact that she was settled in her room and the nurse would bring the baby by any minute, nick was rattling out yet another dad joke.
she finally let out a deep, heavy sigh and turned to nick. “there was a dad who tried to keep his wife happy through labor by telling jokes, but she didn't laugh once. know why?”
nick stopped pacing and moved closer. his eyebrows rose in pleasant surprise at her attempt for a joke – nora typically didn’t appreciate the wittiness of his puns and tolerated his jokes at best.
“why?” he was almost giddy with excitement.
“it was the delivery,” she deadpanned.
his eyes widened and cheeks seemed to stretch with his grin. “did you just—?”
“that will be the only time and if you tell anyone i will deny it,” she said, features softening when nick leaned in to give her a kiss. “now can you please stop pacing and come here?”
they both turned toward the door at the sound of a knock, heartbeats quickening in sync as the nurse appeared with a bundled blanket in their arms.
“here you go, mama,” the nurse said quietly as they carefully placed the baby in nora’s arms.
tears immediately sprung to her eyes at the sight of her child. never in her wildest dreams did she ever think she’d become a mother. her experience with her own parents was more than enough to swear her off the idea of having kids forever. and the example of nick’s parents terrified her as well, albeit for different reasons. she didn’t want what happened to button to happen to their children either.
but despite her initial protests, she couldn’t deny that nick was born to be a father.
“how do i already love you so much?” she sniffled, gratefully grabbing the tissue nick handed her to blow her nose. “nick, this is terrifying. i’m feeling so much – from you, too.”
“i know,” he murmured, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and sitting on the bed next to her. “we made them. you are so amazing. i love you both so much.”
~~~
“it’s been hours. are they going to be okay?” jasmine asked, glancing up at the large clock in the waiting room.
“i have an idea to pass the time,” john said, eyes twinkling. “have you ever tried to eat a clock? it's very time consuming.”
jasmine groaned at her dad’s joke, not having noticed gray’s chuckle or the way kent’s lips quirked up into a smirk before he schooled his features.
“not the time, grandpa,” hope warned, not-so-lightly slamming the back of her hand against john’s chest.
a beaming nick skipped into the waiting room, interrupting whatever comeback john was preparing. “they’re here! both baby and nora’s okay. come on, i can’t wait for you to meet them.”
they all followed – the wisemans’, kent, and gray – and squeezed around nora’s bed. nick gently took the baby from her and handed her carefully to jasmine, who had already pressed herself to the side of the bed before her parents had the chance to look at their first grandchild.
“oh, look at their little nose,” jasmine whispered, cradling the infant against her chest. “they’re as cute as a button.”
nora raised her hand just as nick opened his mouth, jasmine’s eyes sparkling with laughter at the realization of what she just said.
“no, we’re not passing on the nickname,” nora said, her mouth easing into a tired smile. “i wouldn’t take that from jasmine.”
“let me hold my grandbaby,” hope’s no-nonsense voice cut in. her tone softened in the breathless ‘oh’ that escaped her as she looked down at the sleeping baby. “do you have a name for them yet?”
“naomi. their name is naomi lily wiseman,” nora said softly, snuggling into nick’s side.
“wait, so you’d be—nick, nora, and naomi? the three n-kateers?” john asked after hope had passed the baby to him.
“keep that up and i’ll revoke your visitation rights,” nora warned teasingly. john laughed and carefully handed the baby over to gray, who had been standing quietly to the side.
hope helped position the baby against his chest, the poor man had no clue how to hold an infant and had awkwardly kept his arms extended. nora nudged her chin toward gray and gave nick a knowing look.
“gray, nora and i wanted to ask you something. we couldn’t think of anyone else who we’d want looking out for them,” nick said softly as he squeezed nora’s shoulder. “will you be naomi’s godfather?”
“but i don’t know the first thing about raising children!” gray’s panicked voice elicited chuckles around the room.
“we don’t plan on going anywhere for a long time, gray,” nora rolled her eyes affectionately. “we just want naomi to have people they know they can go to if there’s something they can’t talk to us about. people who will look out for them no matter what.”
gray’s eyes softened as he looked back down at the sleeping baby. “i can do that,” he whispered. “you are already too precious for this world.”
“my turn again,” jasmine said, reaching for the baby despite gray’s obvious reluctance to let go of his godchild. “i need to practice for when it’s our turn.”
nora felt a hazy, flaxen wave of anxiety pour out of kent and she instinctively turned to him. he was standing to her right, arms tucked deep into his pockets as he looked at jasmine, cooing at naomi on the other side of the room. his shoulders tensed for a brief moment before they settled and he glanced over, locking eyes with nora.
his grey eyes held back a storm threatening to break.
as if on cue, nick stood up and started shooing everyone out of the room. “nora needs to rest and i need more time with my baby,” he said as jasmine passed naomi back to her.
kent’s gaze dropped to the baby in her arms – the storm having passed as though it were never there to begin with – before he met nora’s and gave her a nod.
“you’re going to be a wonderful mother,” he said softly and nora felt tears well up again.
she gave him a warm smile – one that held significant shared understanding between them – and he returned it. they found over time that they shared many of the same fears that prevented them from being open to being parents. and they found solace in knowing they wouldn’t have to figure out how to overcome those fears on their own – she would prop him up and he would help her stand.
and together, they’d find their footing as part of the wiseman family.
MEGGERS alright so i owe my mind blind playing to you and i finally got a chance to read your mb fic, so i’m going to say my fave of your recent works is catching colds and feelings!
the tone is hilarious; i snorted out loud multiple times reading this. ellie is a great character and i can’t wait to read more about her--her and nick’s dynamic is very cute, and i love that she is both pragmatic and intimidating in trying to get grayson to rest. this description of her feelings for grayson was *chef’s kiss*
What she really means is, “Please don’t ask me to be alone in a room with him. I definitely don’t have feelings for him because I locked them in a box, wrapped the box with tape, shoved it in another box, tied it shut, and tossed it in Lake Michigan. But apparently my feelings are kind of like Jumanji? Minus the ominous drumbeats. The point is they keep coming back. And I think my ‘if I deny it hard enough I’ll convince myself we’re just friends’ plan will be just slightly harder to pull off if we’re alone.” But she tries not to think too hard about that.
anyway i love all your twc writing and now i s2g you’re going to convert me to a gray-mancer and i’m not even mad about it lmao <3
Let's go with overgrown or shimmer, for whoever you think is appropriate! <3
thank you for the request, @captainsaku! i went with overgrown.
author’s note: ‘overgrown’ reminded me of taylor swift’s ‘ivy’ and i tried to capture some of that sentiment here. hope you all enjoy!
button, wake up.
what do you want, saint nick?
nothing, just need you to… stop dreaming about… him.
she shot up in bed and groaned into her hands, the sound of nick cringing echoing in her head.
just get out of my head.
she started blasting punk rock music and turned on the shower, letting the sounds and the steam drown out nick’s thoughts and push her dreams away.
this was starting to get out of hand. it was bad enough she couldn’t stop thinking about rosy while awake, but he was appearing vividly in her dreams now. like ivy inching into the crevices of her carefully designed walls.
something about [them] - ambrose kim x f!button (mb)
author’s note: I just had this scene play out in my head and I wanted to use a microprompt format to write it. hope you all enjoy!
ivy stopped just short of the exit doors as nick’s voice popped into her head.
can you stop by the grocery store on your way home?
she groaned out loud, but responded, what do you need?
she grabbed a scrap piece of paper and a pen from her purse as nick started rattling off a list in her head. once she wrote everything down, she resumed her pace toward the exit before nick grabbed her arm at the sound of a familiar voice.
“wiseman!”
i think rosy’s calling you.
“i know for a fact he’s not calling me,” she smirked.
“cadet park,” ambrose nodded stiffly at ivy who saluted in return before walking away.
nick’s jaw dropped as he looked back-and-forth between ambrose and his sister as the realization that there must be something going on with them hit him, suddenly making him wish he didn’t eat so much at lunch.
