I hate riding the bus. I don't mind the crush of people, I don't mind sitting next to strangers, because all of those things come right along with riding the T, which I love. It's great people-watching, the rumble of the train is so soothing. No, there's something about riding the bus that is so much more foul than the T. The bus draws all the smokers who spend every penny on cigarettes and can't afford the extra dollar per ride on the T. The stubborn pervasiveness of cigarette smoke never fails to astound me. And somehow, when you put fifty people together, the whole seatbelt thing goes straight out the window. The chances of getting into an accident on the T are so slim compared to those of the bus ride. These are Boston streets and I don't have any faith in my fellow man to drive a car. I don't like putting my life in the hands of a stranger and I don't even get a seatbelt, an airbag, anything to protect me.
