Deleted Scene: Of Whiskey and Tequila

Here’s a scene that never quite made it into the original story, which takes place shortly after the end of her shift on November 1st. (She and McCoy slept together for the first time the night of Halloween.) The original character mentioned in this chapter is not mine, but belongs to @thebookofsands.

“I have to tell you something,” Danielle Blake says in a rush as she makes her way into Lt. Rhee Box’s quarters.

Her teeth are practically digging into her lower lip and Rhee swears she looks like she’s about to burst. Blake is practically bouncing on her heels, fingers twisting together, and a look of uncertainty flits around her eyes.

“Well, don’t leave me in suspense here…” Rhee directs, pushing herself further up the bed so she can settle against the headboard.

“You have to promise me you’re not going to tell anyone,” she insists.

“Especially not Jim.”

“Yes, of course…” The brunette waves her off. “Out with it.”

“IsleptwithDoctorMcCoy.”

The words come out in such a flurry that Rhee isn’t positive she’s heard it correctly. “I’m sorry… say that again. Slower. And in a language I can actually understand.”

“I slept with Dr. McCoy,” Danielle repeats, a pink tint rapidly appearing on her cheeks. Her teeth are clenched together as she looks up at her friend, lips pulled into a grimace.

“W-what?” Box manages to squeak out. “When?”

“Um…” The blonde doctor scratches at the back of her neck and it’s only then that Rhee realizes her normally perfect blonde waves are more than a bit out of place and still damp, likely from a shower. “Last night, before I got to the party… in his office…” she closes and eye and coughs. “Then after the party in his quarters. And again this morning before breakfast.”

“So three times in the last twenty-four hours?”

Her face is practically scarlet now. “Well, only if you’re counting the number of times as durations with breaks in-between.”

Rhee’s eyes twinkle. “And if I’m not?”

“Then…” Danielle begins to tick off her fingers. “Seven.”

Her emerald eyes glance down at the floor again as she settles into the chair at the brunette’s bedside. Dr. Blake has always been a model of responsibility and professionalism, a PhD by 22 and a senior officer in Starfleet at 26. Her lab is pristine, her quarters equally so, and not a hair is usually out of place.

So for the scientist to act with such reckless abandon, to engage in relations with another senior officer on the Enterprise, albeit an incredibly attractive one, is far beyond the norm.

Rhee shakes her brunette curls, still in utter disbelief. “I have never been prouder of another human being in my entire life.”
