In MBMBAM episode 526 “Why Not A Wizard?”, they discussed inventing new sports based on combining existing sports, and y’all, my brain got a-whirring. Here is my invention, based on the three sports I participated in as a teen: ARCHERY, HORSEBACK RIDING, AND CURLING.
Start with regular curling, except only 3 people will throw, and the 4th person on the team will be on horseback cantering in a ring around the ice. (English or Western are both acceptable - up to each team to decide.) After each team throws their six stones, the 4th person, the one on horseback, will shoot an arrow at a stone. (Handles will need to be made of wood, cork, or some other porous material, not plastic.)
They can hit an opposing team’s stone to knock it out of competition, or they can hit one of their own team’s to give them an extra point. The second archer may choose to hit the same stone as the first, to cancel them out. Note that there will need to be some sort of time limit, as the idea is they will shoot from wherever they are in the ring - not wait until they are close to the house. (All players must wear helmets and padding.)
After two ends, the rider will come down to curl and the next person will mount up. (There is no time limit here, as depending on team members’ heights, they may need to adjust stirrup length.) Echoing traditional curling, the terms “lead, second, third, and skip” will now refer to the order of who is riding, rather than the order of who is throwing.
Game ends after 8 ends. IN THE EVENT OF A TIE: Each team will choose someone from the opposing team to compete in a head-to-head mounted archery contest. A triangle of bullseyes will be placed in the middle of the ice. Three arrows, three shots. The best archer wins the game for their team.
CURRENTLY ACCEPTING SPONSORS, AND ALSO A NAME FOR THIS NEW SPORT.
