ATTN: McKinley Park residents, our neighbors, and local environmental justice advocates: The time to fight is now—a most pivotal moment in the two-year community-driven campaign against the MAT Asphalt plant.

Two big events are coming up: the Illinois EPA's public hearing about the 10-year permit they've drafted for MAT Asphalt (please provide oral testimony! please show up to show support for the community!), and—prior to the public hearing—a Neighbors For Environmental Justice-run event to help community members understand the permit and how to give effective comments (including from an environmental justice lawyer familiar with such hearings and from organizers who have been doing the work).

Earlier this month at the McKinley Park Farmers Market, I remounted the sign re-painting project, again in partnership with Neighbors For Environmental Justice!

In this drop-in activity, participants were invited to share their perspective on local environmental assets and challenges, and create and take home a custom sign with a message of their choice! To me, it was especially rewarding to meet or reconnect with neighbors, introduce many to N4EJ’s vital work, learn about other organizers’ efforts, and see dozens of resulting creative-reuse artworks that were as varied in expressive mode as they were in message.

Many thanks to Alfredo, Myrna, Tish, and Erica for helping prep those salvaged political signs, and thanks to everyone who came out to join us or who just happened upon us in the park and stayed! I encourage everyone to check out N4EJ’s essential work in support of our community and of others on the southwest side.
