Anon Judge:
My vote goes between MCLTheQuest: Alexy D&D Style by theblondechippewa and Flimsy Set-up by mclhideaway. In simple commentary I will say theblondechippewa’s was the most entertaining though it threw D&D into a random mess which does show the lack of motivation to follow through on the topic. I felt that mclhideaway’s was the most well written, but it did not focus on Armin as a main character and so I would’ve liked more involvement with that. Candy’s Adventure with D&D would come in third for me. It had a slightly more positive Candy’s pov and I could see that attempts were made, but nothing in particular stood out for me. Cheese Puffs: I wasn’t a big fan of it at first, but the silliness seemed slightly more realistic but portrayed Armin in a light that lead him to understandably complain about his friends’ sheer lack of knowledge with the game. The ending was halfway entertaining. Uninvited quite honestly just plain offended me. It started off okay with everyone going to join Armin for DnD, but it took a turn for the worst and turned into an out of character complaint fest and reckless party. My boyfriend, basically real life Armin, holds game nights all the time and I can be the only girl there and make an effort to understand the game or even come close to winning. I love tabletop games and maybe I just didn’t want to see it be written off as lame.
Armun judges (Britt and Erik).
So after heavy thought we’ve gone with these for first, sec, third. Before we go further, we just... I guess in the end we really did make this topic too hard. I mean, I guess it was thoughtless of us not to realize alot of the writers for this fandom are young and don’t write usually more than 1k on something. So a lot of the problems we agreed on is it felt rush in some entries and some lingered too long on situations, or unnecessarily set up the story then didn’t follow through.
We’re also surprised by Armin’s portrayal in a lot of these. Like he was really douchey and judgemental, (or at least characters viewed him as such for not knowing stuff?). In the game, while Armin has great surprise if you don’t know something about his games and if you admit it, he’s usually good about offering to play with you or show you stuff (with high LOM). So yeah that struck us as odd and especially how we canon him as well.
We’re also kinda sad how not many people tried to go more into the D&D world in their stories. Like besides rolling dice which is kinda given information... it’s just kinda disappointing. You know the internet can help and we said in like every message possible to come and talk to us for help. The lesson out of this is to do more than write; look up, research, study a character. Effort and then more effort because then your potential increases significantly.
Contest Entry by theblondechippewa (Also dubbed Alexy D&D Style). We liked the small step by step process the story does on building a character, trying to RP it. We can tell either you looked up info or had previous knowledge about the game; medium sized creatures for fairies? That kinda surprised us. Also makes the story more realistic from what it seems like you were trying to write; an attempt at a campaign game and the struggles of learning it and playing it. I feel like (britt mun) that you really got invested into the story, as much as Armin was when he starts narrating.
We nearly died at laughter from the turn of events. First off, killing Dimitri is plus 10 approval from us (Love you Dimi <3). The magical fairy punching and shooting arrows, it was just hilarious... Also noting once more we love the realism of Armin LETTING THIS HAPPEN. Not because he’s fed up and mad, or he’s all nutty for some reason, but in real D&D if you say “I’m going to punch” or do something... Haha, you do it then. No take backsies.
The last bit that won us over was Armin enjoying Alexy’s very, very different and silly version of D&D. He doesn’t accept it right away but eventually it creeps up on him and he ends up loving Alexy Style D&D. It’d be really cool to see a illustration of this drabble.
Flimsy Set Up by mclhideaway. This story is cute and doesn’t entirely focus around D&D and that bugs us. But it’s really well written, this is something we can’t deny. Armin played a supporting role in this, with the drabble focusing prominently on the reader and Lucy. The reactions and in character replies are really good, timed. I feel (Erik) that the tone is awkward (not in a bad way) because of the Reader juggling Lucy’s ignorance and keeping her in good graces with Armin. Not usually expected for a Reader fic but there is very much a personality showing in this, one that is shy and quiet; knowledgeable and knows when to speak and listen. I’d like to see a continuation down the road. It felt like a nice set up to something bigger so I was sad to see it cut off. Overall we may have placed this 1st if it had continued and we saw even more character development and plot.
Candy’s D&D Adventure by dezziewinter. This story has a lot of details in it and story telling writing, which I appreciate because it’s similar to mine. It’s a style that can be underrated. That said, I feel like the ending was rushed or cut off. Britt mun really likes the last few lines of Candy appreciating him in his element of story telling and in a atmosphere more comfortable for him.
Cheesy Puffs by surxsesh. We felt Armin was OOC in this fic, which happens, and lightly for other characters. For instance, a DM would take the time to make sure players knew what they were getting into and we’d like to think Armin would try to explain that because that would make it more fun to play. Taking into consideration Armin in game has shown tendencies to not put up with blatant lies about knowing game stuff (then not really) or surprised that you don’t know. This scene doesn’t have to be written entirely but hinted at if that makes sense. However, we also accept that this is the character’s view of Armin as gripey/complaining gaming nerd whose not putting up with his friends BS. It makes more sense like that for us.
We do think it’s hilarious as heck that Kentin owned Armin’s butt with the new D&D edition on fairies and that Armin is a bit of a pervert. It was humorous and had a funny ending.
Uninvited by hellyeaheldarya. This drabble is very different from the others and our assumption is that this is a parody story. A lot of the characters are OOC and it seems like it’s steered to be a very silly story. There’s some good snorting laughter moments we had at the ridiculous change of events and think it’s a humorous piece. Whether or not this was the intention of the writer, we don’t know. It seems like a funny crack/parody fic you’d see where you’re like what on earth is going on anymore.
