Thoughts About My College

When applied for the BVC course in St. Joseph's, I had an image in my mind of me and my batchmates working on various media projects outside on the field without many barriers. Now that i'm actually in the course, that image has been tarnished a bit.

The biggest thing I didn't expect from the college that would contradict said image was the strict attendance system. It makes it hard for us to take up projects and extracurriculars outside the college without worrying about passing or failing the term depending on whether we have the minimum attendance.

Also, there are no unexpected plusses that I have encountered from the college.

However, if anyone mentions Joseph's to me after I graduate, the location that'll always appear as a mental image in my head will be that of the Hostel Block.

My Response to the "Boys Don't Cry" Video

This is my honest opinion on the "Boys Don't Cry" video shown above. While its message and intentions are no doubt for the best, I feel that they have limited their scope a little.

Domestic abuse against both men and women can occur for a variety of reasons, which include alcohol and drugs, childhood abuse, patriarchal settings, and a myriad of other factors. All of these factors have to be dealt with equally to combat this problem, instead of focusing on just one factor. Well, I feel that this video did the latter instead of the former.

The video was constructed in such a way that the "boys don't cry" maxim was the sole reason for violence against women. The cuts of the phrase being spoken to the boys from childhood to adulthood were tragic and yet repetitive in their message, ultimately resulting in the abuser actually holding back tears at the end of the video.

Make no mistake, the hard-hitting purpose of this video can't be denied. I just wish that their message could been more all-rounded to include all the patriarchal and substance abuse factors that contribute to this problem. Perhaps it could be argued that the "boys don't cry" angle was just one of many examples that they showed to #StartWithTheBoys, and that Vogue will make more videos highlighting other causes. But for now, I feel that the only problem with the video was that it was limited in its scope.

Comic Book

Not a usual reader of comic books, I didn’t know which software will be more suitable and easy to use for me. So I searched for a comic book reader. In the results of my search on Google about comic book reader, I found a website, http://lifehacker.com/5858906/five-best-desktop-comic-book-readers, who presented several comic book reader and do a survey to see which one is the best ( I didn’t use any of those comic readers). Not knowing which one to use, I decided to use all of them, judge and pick the good one for me. Looking for a software to read the comic book, I came across several software like CBR Reader downloaded on www.cbrreader.com. Then I saw also this other software called C.B.R from this website https://wfpbookreader.codeplex.com/ . Between these two comic book readers, I chose C.B.R... I think compared to the first one CBR Reader, C.B.R is much easier to use. To use this software, the first step is to download on the website given below. The version I’m using, is 0.7.0.0 but there the last version is 0.9.0.0. After downloaded and installed, you need to create a library where all your comics will added. To do so, just click on the option New from the Library tab. From there, you just have to specify where the library should be saved and a give a name. After creating the library, from the same tab, choose the option Add and Add a file. After selecting that option, a new window will appear and go where you saved your comic books, not the library. Only one comic book can be added at the time. Repeat the last step till all your comic book are added. To be added, the comic book should in .cbr,.cbz.rar,.zip,.cbzd format. All the comic book added to your library will be visible in the library explorer. To open a comic book, just double click on the one you want and it’ll appear. After all these steps, the last step is to save that library otherwise all the comic books added will be gone; and to save, go to the File tab and click on save. Another library can be created but first the current library should be closed. Go Library tab and option Close.

Embarrassing Photo

The photograph the most embarrassing took and I would delete for sure, is a photograph took in 2010 by one of my friend. In 2010, I was in high school and if I remember clearly, I was in 10th grade. It was in the afternoon around 2 AM and I was heading to the canteen with my friend, buy some sweet drinks and play cards (Our usual activity). On that day we decided with all the 10th grade of the school to add a tie to our normal uniform (white shirt and blue plant) to look a bit formal. So for that day, one of my friend decided to bring a camera to take photograph of this kind of special day. At the canteen, we were around 10 person playing cards and shouting. It was loudly because everyone bets for the game (the one winning keeps all the bet), and wants to win. It was a very funny, interesting and exciting moment. Everyone was laughing and during all this time one of friend was taking picture of that moment. In all this atmosphere, I laughing like hell and my friend took a photograph at this moment. In that photographs, I’ve got my mouth wide open with all my teeth visible. I think if we look carefully we can see in this my throat.

Meaningful Photographs

Find a photograph in my phone who really mean something to me, I can think of only 3-4 photographs. But lately I got a new photograph sent by my mum. The cutest thing of the world: a photograph of my newly born niece. I saw that photograph when I just woke up and that day was one of the brightest day. During the all day, I was truly happy like no way before. She is my first niece and first granddaughter for my parents and I know she will be a special one based on her mother character. After all this excitement and happiness, I felt a bit sad because I wasn’t there when this big event happened in my family to support them. The end is a bit sad but this photograph represent the most meaningful photograph

FYI: Her name is Anne Emmanuelle Epiphanie and I love her already.

Selfi...

People have different perceptions about why is the concept of selfi so viral. We have discussed most of it in class. Now I would like to talk a little about my own perception. Jumping right into the point. I believe people are more comfortable when they pose to themselves. I experience this all the time. When my picture is taken by someone else, I am constantly worrid about how my picture is going to turn up. I feel so weird, to bring out a natural smile looking at a grumpy camera person, staring right into the lense which makes no sense. Why would I feel so happy looking at the camera? But when I look at an image of myself I am more confident about how I am going to look in the picture. when the result which is right in front of me is pleasing, it brings a natural smile. Moreover I am at least looking at a human reflection and smiling, rather than faking a natural smile in front of a lense. I feel free to pose. I am not conscious. I'm not being judged. I have complete control over the final result. And yes ofcose I needn't bribe my friend to take pictures of me. So y hesitate, let's take a selfi.

The inverted institution's With all due respect for my own intitution I would like to just express my own views, about the prevailing educational institution's and their system of education. What is the image ? The picture which I clicked has a wine glass in the fore ground and the humanities block in the background. It was taken from the terrece. The wine glass was filled with water as so it reflects an inverted image of the humanity block. Thus you can clearly see, tr is an inverted image of the humanity's block being reflected from the wine glass filled with water, and the humanities block being slightly out of focus in the background. Why did I capture such an image ? well, it is more of my personal school experience which I wanted to express in my picture. 16 years of solid learning and writing exams has tough me nothing, nothing about life. Nothing about survival. Even though now I am an expert in finding X, having an adequate knowledge about our history and i am well aware of all the tirukurals written by the great poetist Tiruvalluvar. I learnt nothing which will get me through my life's tiermoils. I agree that the present education system does help me to find a job in the future, but if a person developes his knowledge based on only what is taught in these institutions, then the hope of having a future will be a questionable sentence. Thus I conclude by stating that the school education must be altered to suit the primary needs of life and survival.

Pride of Baghdad

Pride of Baghdad the most enjoyable read I had since the winter break. The graphic novel written by Brian K. Vaughan has a lively and colourful palate. The cartoonish illustrative style of the comic allows the reader to experience animals with dialogue, actions and emotions. The start of the graphic novel pages of just the skies which to me signified the beauty of the vast world and the openness the main characters find themselves in. Although, the sketching limits the detail to only what is really necessary Most panels in this graphic novel are worth a stare.

The omniscient point of view in the graphic novel follows the extreme conditions of four lions who escape from city’s zoo into a war torn Baghdad shortly after the first United States bombings in 2003. The art style works for this story consisting of a lot of movement and intense encounters. Also, the panel lay outs vary page to page depicting actions of more importance in bigger panels or a full page. At points of the graphic novel the shapes of the panels drastically change from the previous page to give a disorienting effect to add to the surprises the visual narrative has to offer.

Throughout the graphic novel various sections of the story are colour toned to convey the mood and setting. An example would be how the panels are coloured more realistically when the mood of the comic is rather calm and understandable, especially towards the beginning of the novel. However, as the protagonists come under attack and discover new places the colours get much warmer tone, vivid for their freedom and even dark when they enter the abandoned palace. As the story gets Intense the drawings even become two toned with just orange and red. This would be an example of the creator’s use of colour in his visual rhetoric.

I would recommend this read to anybody and will definitely be reading other graphic novels by the same creators.
