since @kc-needs-coffee (or @kc-and-co, as some may have seen) released Kennedy and Bruce’s meet-cute story, i felt it was only right to follow it up with Cassie and Steve’s not-so-cute meet-cute!
thanks for being on this wild ride with me, wifey. there’s no one else i’d rather be on this writing adventure with.
@erinislands i’m not sure if you wanted to be tagged as well, but i tagged you just in case you wanted to see!☺️
read Cassie and Steve’s snarky first meeting under the cut!
Cassie expected many things of her life, but the one thing she didn’t expect was being called in by the head of S.H.I.E.L.D himself, Director Nick Fury.
The facility itself was rather impressive, all the one-way glass window panes so they could see out but no one could see inside, the machines and technology unparalleled. The conference room wasn’t too shabby either, comfortable leather chairs with a sleek black table. It was definitely something Cassie could get used to.
She sat near the head of the table, to the left of Natasha Romanoff, Clint Barton to the right of the redhead, and directly across from Cassie, Steve Rogers. Captain America? Captain Rogers? Just Steve?
Whatever the hell he called himself these days, Cassie knew him and the other two immediately due to the numerous news reports after the alien attack on New York— an incident in which she had believed she used her powers discreetly enough to protect herself, her friends, and her family to go undetected, but apparently somehow controlling the mind of an alien from whatever unknown species to not crash into the building where her friend worked wasn’t something that could just go unnoticed.
“Miss Hart.” Fury’s voice broke the awkward silence of the conference room as he entered, his very aura commanding the respect of everyone in the room.
“Just Cassie, please.” She nodded to the Director.
“Cassie,” Director Fury nodded, “to my understanding it seems that you are the bearer of some rather special and remarkable abilities.” He sat in his chair at the head of the table, “care to enlighten us on that?”
“I’m sure you already know the basics, that being that I’m capable of mind control and, in simple terms, seeing the future.” Cassie shifted her weight onto her left arm, her legs crossed.
“Yes, but what about how you obtained these abilities? Where did they come from?” Fury folded his arms, leaning back in his chair.
“I don’t know exactly how I got them.” Cassie admitted, “all I knew was that I was sixteen, it was a normal day, I grabbed my best friend’s arm and had a vision of her, hurt and begging for me to help. I don’t know when that vision was supposed to take place, just who was involved and where. The only other thing is that I didn’t want everyone and their mother to know about it.”
Fury nodded, seemingly understanding of her reason to hide, “so these powers just surfaced out of the blue?”
“Yes sir.” Cassie sighed, “I wish I could tell you more, but I truly have no idea about them. Just that I want to use them for even just a little bit of good, and that’s why I became a freelance agent after working with the NYPD for a little bit.”
“What else are you capable of beyond a bit of mind magic tricks, Hart?” Steve finally asked the question that had been eating at his mind since Fury had briefed them on the meeting.
“With all due respect, Captain,” Cassie’s eyes cut over to Steve, who seemed to be skeptical of her, “what I am capable of doesn’t concern you. As best as I recall, Director Fury wished to speak with me, not you.”
From the corner of her eye, Cassie could see Natasha trying to cover a smirk and a laugh by taking a sip of her drink and Clint’s eyes widened in amusement at her blatant snark towards the Captain.
Steve’s brow arched as a nervous smile made its way onto his face, “just trying to find out more about you.” He held his hands up in defense, “clearly you’re not one for much talking.”
“Oh no I’ll talk.” Cassie smirked, “just not with you. Not yet, at least.” She finally took a sip from the cup of coffee that sat in front of her.
“Alright,” Fury’s eyes cut between the two, “I called Miss Hart in for a matter more important than squabbling over her abilities. Cassie, how would you feel about becoming one of the most important parts of S.H.I.E.L.D?”
“I— I don’t follow…” Cassie shook her head, her brows furrowed in confusion.
“Let me ask you something.” Fury sat up, clearing his throat, “how does Agent Hart sound to you?”
“Agent?” Cassie asked in disbelief, “Director Fury, are you…offering me a position as a S.H.I.E.L.D agent?”
“Only if you want to take it.” The Director’s rather emotionless face held a somewhat intrigued grin, “be a shame if HYDRA got a hold of you instead.”
“Would you mind if we spoke about this in a more private manner? Without everyone else around?” Cassie offered, the job offer mulling over in her mind even though she’d already made her decision.
“Rogers, Romanoff, Barton.” Fury nodded to the three heroes, “if you would give us a moment please.”
“Sure thing.” Steve nodded, “Hart, maybe we’ll have a chance to speak sometime?” He offered his hand for a handshake as he stood to take his leave.
“Only in your dreams, Captain.” Cassie smirked, shaking his hand before he left, catching up to Clint and Natasha who were already halfway down the hall.
“Now, where were we, Miss—”
“I’ll do it.” Cassie eagerly interrupted, having already made up her mind as soon as Fury offered her the position, “I just didn’t want to say it with Rogers in here.”
Fury let out a curt chuckle, “well, it’s a pleasure to have you on the team, Agent Hart. We’ll get your paperwork processed this afternoon.” He offered his hand to Cassie.
“Thank you, Director Fury.” She shook his hand, “I think I could get used to this.”
“And you’ll need this.” He took a set of yellow manila folders from his inside coat pocket, “every agent and affiliate of S.H.I.E.L.D has their own personal file, these are the files of those that you will be working closely with, I think it’s best that you take a look at them, get to know your associates a little better. I’ll be back with your paperwork in a bit and I’ll bring Agent Maria Hill in to meet with you.” The Director rose from his chair, pushing it in before he took his leave, only to stop short in the doorway.
“Is there something wrong, Director?” Cassie asked, looking up from the seven folders that sat in front of her.
“Oh no, nothing’s wrong. Although you might want to look at that folder in the middle, I think you’ll find it quite interesting.” Fury smirked before disappearing into the busy hallway.
Cassie opened up the middle folder, revealing Steve’s file, pictures of him before and after taking the serum and all of his military records staring back at her, almost as if they were mocking her.
“oh you’ve got to be fucking kidding me…” she murmured to herself.
