According to Los Angeles Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak, head coach Mike D’Antoni will be back on the sidelines in Hollywood next season after helping guide the team to a 7th Playoff seed (going 28-12 since the infamous late January team meeting.)
Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni is wrestling with the idea of bringing Pau Gasol off the bench, and the four-time All-Star is not embracing the thought of a potential demotion.
Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said that Pau Gasol will assume Earl Clark's spot in the starting lineup as soon as he returns from the concussion that has sidelined the star forward for the last five games.
In his initial remarks after being told of Amar’e Stoudemire slamming him about a lack of defensive coaching, Mike D’Antoni was quite classy and deftly played off the charge. When asked about the issue again today, the Lakers’ head coach was considerably more honest, and displayed his annoyance. Per the LA Times: “It’s mind-boggling. I mean, come on,’ D’Antoni said. ‘He threw Frank Johnson, myself, Alvin Gentry and actually Mike Woodson … was he saving the good stuff? Because he coached him eight months and he was the defensive coach. It doesn’t make any sense.’ [...] D’Antoni was Stoudemire’s head coach for more than 8½ seasons in Phoenix and New York. ‘If he’s learning, great,’ D’Antoni said. ‘That would be super. It just boggles the mind.’”
Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni admitted his team is looking up to the Los Angeles Clippers and their 16-game winning streak.
Instead of sniping at each other through the media, Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D’Antoni and power forward Pau Gasol had dinner to hash things out. According to the LA Times, D’Antoni assured Gasol that he would no longer bench him at crunchtime (something that has infuriated the Spaniard this season.): “Gasol said he wanted the ball in the post instead of on the perimeter and also asked to play in crunch time, among the topics discussed with D’Antoni at a Manhattan Beach restaurant.
Magic Johnson questioned new coach Mike D'Antoni's system with the slumping Los Angeles Lakers, saying "it doesn't fit the talent the Lakers have."
John Hollinger says that if he were Mike D'Antoni, he wouldn't worry about Hack-a-Dwight, because it's seldom effective.
