Learn the difference between MDM and EMM
MDM and EMM are both solutions designed to manage and secure mobile devices within an organization. However, there are distinctions between the two in terms of scope, functionality, and the range of features they offer:
Scope:
MDM typically focuses on managing and securing mobile devices themselves, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. It deals primarily with device-level management, controlling settings, configurations, and security measures on these devices.
EMM encompasses a broader spectrum by not only managing devices but also managing the applications and content on those devices. EMM includes MDM functionality while extending its capabilities to application management and content management.
Functionality:
MDM primarily involves the administration of device settings, configurations, and security policies. It allows IT administrators to enforce passcode policies, remote device wiping, device inventory, OS updates, and compliance checks.
EMM incorporates MDM features along with additional functionalities like app distribution, managing app permissions, securing and distributing corporate data and content, ensuring data encryption, and providing secure containers or workspaces for segregating personal and corporate data.
Features:
MDM functionalities typically include device enrollment, remote device management, enforcing security policies, configuring Wi-Fi and email settings, tracking device location, and remote wiping.
EMM encompasses all MDM features while adding capabilities such as app distribution, managing app permissions, securing corporate data with containerization, securing communication channels, and integrating mobile security protocols across applications and content.
In essence, while MDM focuses on managing and securing devices, EMM provides a more comprehensive solution by extending its capabilities to include application management and content security, offering a more holistic approach to mobility management within organizations
