It took 4 hours to write and fully record, and it lasts two and half minutes; ‘The Modern Age’ sees Meadow Burials follow up last years’ demo EP ‘Preface’ with a snarling slice of social commentary. If the Nick Wiltone helmed project can get its point across in two minutes, thirty seconds, we’re taking that as a challenge – this review won’t exceed two hundred and thirty words, LET’S GO!
Raw, urgent and punchy is how best to describe ‘The Modern Age’; it’s held together by a rabid bloodlust and ire that can only be borne from what it’s like to be a human in 2020. Across three tracks, a raging, lo-fi punk carries the theme of anger and anxiety. ‘Crossfire’ sounds like it could have been written today “watch the news/these times are strange”. The EP’s eponymous track has Wiltone barking the mantra “curse of the modern age” like a pariah ushering in the apocalypse while ‘Everything’ dials back the discordant assault for something catchier but no less intense. Imagine The Ramones, but angry.
This is an EP to soundtrack the dystopia we find ourselves in right now, where a global pandemic has taken over the planet, killing people in the thousands and nonchalantly bringing the world’s economy to its knees...is this ‘The Modern Age’?
