"New "Meanest" Thief Picks Service Men as His Victims," Windsor Star. October 27, 1943. Page 3. --- The meanest thief in town is no longer robbing the blind but has turned his efforts to those who have a particular right not to expect people to rob them-the boys in service.
Mrs. A. N. Laidlaw, 1249 Kildare road, reported late yesterday after- noon that her son, LAC. Jack Laidlaw, and two other R.C.A.F. members, boarded a city bus last Saturday night and found when they got off that each had had his wallet stolen.
The boys were home on leave their first leave since enlistment, as it happened-making their loss a particular strain.
Some semblance of decency remained in the pick-pocket, however, for LAC Laidlaw's wallet with all his papers was found at the post office in an envelope addressed to him. The money was missing.
In making her report of the incident, the airman's mother said she wished to make known the presence of this particularly low thief and the fact that he apparently preys on service men. The pocket for the wallet in R.C.A.F. uniforms is on the right-hand side. Air force men are advised to keep an eye on that pocket.
Windsor police state that there has been a pick-pocket working in downtown theatres and at railway stations here in recent weeks. He has spaced his thefts cleverly and has so far eluded capture.
