True, there are other explanations, but my knowledge of theology becomes increasingly fuzzier the further away we move from the First Century.

True true - also, never forget Virgil's influence! A concept of good place vs. Bad place for the dead can be seen in Roman thought pre - Christianity in The Aeneid.

Plato had one too. But my knowledge of the influence of Hellenistic philosophy and myth on Christian doctrine could fit on a small postcard in large-font type.

Most of the above is true, but as I repeat to my students about 100x a semester, Constantine did NOT make Christianity the religion of the empire. He and Licinius made Christianity a religio licta. Theodosius made it the official religion.

Yep, I totally glitched on that one. This is what happens when one's professors are insufficiently interested in any Christian history between the middle of the second century and the Holocaust.

Huh. Cool.

I'm not really sure how that works in a sentence for coming into colloquial usage, but interesting to know.

Maybe it was something else that was referred to as a holy city.
