One stack of freshman papers finished. Worship Visit papers were either underwhelming or pleasantly surprising. Now I just have to wade through research outlines and annotated bibliographies. Oh heavens. Anyone know who the patron saint of grading papers is?
Post Therapy Musings
Realized that one of my favorite modes of "escape" is sensory indulgence. Wine, food, perfume, good sounds, preferred textures, aesthetically pleasing outfits, well done make up, etc. really, really put me at ease. For example, I spend WAY too much money on perfume, smelly soap, and scented candles, I am a wine/beer snob, and I have a play list titled "Sounds my brain likes." Instead of over indulgence as a form of escape, my therapist suggested embracing my sensory enjoyment in ways that help me find more meaning and hopefulness in my life, and lead me to make more interpersonal connections. I'm going to look for a wine tasting meet up in the area. Even if I can't get my thoughts in order, I can still have some healthy, fun, and enjoyable experiences by working with my strong sensory preferences.
That sickening feeling you get when you read two, 1-2 page, single spaced papers that sound WAY too similar. And you know the students in question are friends... MUCH DISAPPOINTMENT.

Lack of activity: Entirely due to the fact that I'm generally on Tumblr mobile, and I may or may not have forgotten my password and can't log in 0.o
Silly, I know.
Hannibal right fucking now
Brian Fuller is taking “food porn” to an entirely new level.
That was downright pornographic.
I LOVE IT
We call him Ginger Chubbs, and he is the nastiest, meanest old ginger cat you will ever meet. He is also spoiled rotten and loves belly rubs. He's a mystery wrapped in an enigma, rolled in cheesy poofs.
Improvement: Once Upon A Time with my Dad and a cuddly puppy. Bro tried to play cute and pun with me - FUCK YOU BUDDY.
I was at dinner with my family because I'm feeling especially unstable right now, then my troll brother started making fun of "tumblr feminists." So I fucking walked out of the restaurant. I said, "if you just respect me as a person, please stop." So he said, "I do, that's why you need to experience pain once in a while." Fuck you. No. No. I am I CONSTANT PAIN. FUCK YOU. Tumblr is my ONLY community. It is my ONLY support. You don't fucking attack that and get away.
Too much hair oil. Make up/skin game - decent, after a $150 investment. Not very much sleep (insomnia). Headache. Last day before finals week. Depression - record new depths. Hoping my students don't hate me. And a PILE of papers to grade. JOY.
They make it obvious how RACIST most white Christian missionary activity to developing countries really is. Like, REALLY REALLY RACIST in its premises.
The Book of Mormon isn’t Christian.
They still label themselves “Christian,”…
What I’m saying is that Western Protestant missionary activity has been racist, as it has long been part of the Anglophone cultural imperialist project, part and parcel of the history of colonialism.
Mormons, as an American off shoot of Christianity, has deep roots in ideas of Manifest Destiny, American exceptionalism, White Anglo cultural hegemony, and a whole host of other discourses which are directly rooted in 18th and 19th century Protestantism.
There is a difference between “The Faith” and the lived reality of a tradition as it is practiced on the ground, intersecting with historical events and cultural discourses (or at least we like to think that there is).
Even many “mainstream” Christians, especially in the United States, are STILL dealing with/thinking through their own racist legacies. To ignore the historical relationship between Christianity and racism is delusional, and, from a theological point of view, fails to recognize the failure of the church to carry out the gospel.
Statements of Apology have been issued by many denominations since the 1960s, directly addressing this sinful legacy. Some Christians (in the US especially) have made it a priority to examine the ways in which their use of language (in hymns and liturgy) reflect implicitly racist, sexist, classist, or imperialist ideas. This is a project currently under way within many denominations - because they recognize that Christians HAVE perpetuated racist agendas in the past.
Of course, none of this even scratches the surface of the issues surrounding missionary activity, its roots in colonialist and imperialist projects, its “civilizing” goals, its inability to recognize or value cultural difference, its false and misleading ability to offer access to a ruling colonial class (via conversion), while still maintaining racial boundaries and hierarchies.
all I heard you say was that you were reading the book of mormon, therefore christianity is founded with racist principles. you didn’t put any of the rest of this into what you said, therefore, there was a discrepancy.
My original post was about SEEING the book of Mormon on STAGE.
I was at the Pantages Theater.
Sorry if this was not obvious.

Favorite thing about Book of Mormon so far:
They make it obvious how RACIST most white Christian missionary activity to developing countries really is. Like, REALLY REALLY RACIST in its premises.
The Book of Mormon isn’t Christian.
They still label themselves "Christian," so aside from the details of their theology, they are categorized as Christian.
(It's Christians who argue over who gets to claim the label - that's an insider conversation that, as a scholar, I'm not concerned with. LDS folks get to be "Christians" if that's the label they use for themselves. )
Also, the impetus behind and form of their missionary activity follows in a very long tradition of Western Anglo Protestant missions, so their missionary "heritage" is very much Christian.
sticks and stones may break my bones but words constitute my entire existence and my ability to meaningfully interact with the universe because we live in a textual reality in which everything is constructed and coded by language there is no escaping the symbolic dimensions of it there is nothing outside the text there is nothing outside the text there is nothing outside the text
Really weird when I see a Tumblr post go viral because it’s “So relatable” and it’s, like, about high school life in the new millennium.
I’m practical 30. I follow people of all ages, but these memes about what it’s like to be a teen are jarring as fuck.
Imagine if you logged on and saw people unironically reblogging a post that read: That Feel When teacher says no juice ‘til after nap time.
That’s where I am. That’s the life I’m living.
Yeah mobile Tumblr app now has some shiny colors and shit, but is it still going to force me to reblog long text posts as links?
PROFESSOR ANGST
New basic goals for REL 100 next Fall: 1. Teach students how to write a sentence (Subject + Verb + [object]). 2. Teach basic research skills (e.g. don't just hunt for sources which support your opinions). 3. Explain the difference between descriptive and evaluative wtiting. 4. Explain the importance of editing. 5. Maybe get to the basics of "what is religion?" And "what is Christianity?"
