except it was basically Disney's answer to the Smurfs. It was in a modern setting that didn't make sense with the original storyline, only alluded to their war era origins, was a terrible mix of live action and CGI, and it took place in fucking America. They had apparently started messing with planes again in protest of America's constant meddling in world affairs, convinced that we were going to start WWIII and cause the destruction of even more woodland homes of Gremlins and other forest dwellers. They were eventually discovered by a character played by Ben Stiller, who worked flightline security, and was apparently descended from one of the pilots in Pilot Gus's unit. Ben Stiller reported his discovery to his boss, played by Queen Latifah, who brushed the whole thing off. This is the only part of the plot that came close to resembling the book, as Gremlin Gus (voiced by Sean Connery) began pestering the humans to make sure they knew what they were dealing with. There was also a pointless one-sided romance plot between Gremlin Markus (voiced by Rupert Grint; actually not a bad choice I suppose) and Queen Latifah's character, which pretty much served to make him look like a complete tool. Gremlin Prescott (voiced by Hugh Laurie; also not bad but not who I would pick) made an appearance as well, but his entire character arc was basically "whiih, Gus doesn't appreciate me" and his role in the story was just to point out minor flaws in everything and be the movie's Cosmic Buttmonkey (including a running joke with bird poop). Gremlin Sparks was the comic relief, and he was voiced by GILBERT GODFRIED PLEASE JUST KILL mE. And finally, Fifinella (voiced by Jane Lynch; probably the best casting choice in the entire film) was essentially reduced to a bunch of bad one-liners and some flashy flying, with no real personality or importance to the plot other than to be the token female of the group. Other Gremlins who appeared included Hyperion, Flynn, and Jamface, however they only had a couple lines each and weren't important to the film in the slightest. There were other background Gremlins as well, but their identities were a mystery to me.
