Chladni Singing, 2013, by Meara O'Reilly
You may already know that sound travels as invisible vibrations—but have you ever actually seen your voice’s vibrations? Back at the turn of the 19th century, German physicist and musician Ernst Chladni developed a way to show modes of vibration on a mechanical surface. Our Chladni Singing exhibit lets you use your own voice to create intricate geometric patterns in sand. Have you tried it? How do the patterns change while you warble?
