Successful launch for MEASAT-3b in French Guiana

KOUROU (FRENCH GUIANA), Sept 12, 2014:

Malaysia’s newest satellite, the MEASAT-3b successfully launched from the European spaceport near here, at 7.05pm local time on Thursday (6.05am Malaysian time on Friday).

The US$350 million (RM1.12 billion) communication satellite aims to enhance Measat Satellite System Sdn Bhd’s satellite capacity.

The launch was witnessed by a group of senior Malaysian government and private sector officials, key Measat business partners and four secondary school students from Terengganu.

It is the sixth satellite launched into orbit by the company. The time difference between French Guiana and Malaysia is 11 hours.

MEASAT-3b, to be fully operational by Oct 15, is the third Measat satellite launched by Arianspace, following MEASAT-1 and MEASAT-2 in 1996.

Built by Airbus Defence and Space in Toulouse, France, it has a life span of approximately 15 years.

The satellite has 48 transponders each providing 36 megahertz (Mhz) of bandwidth, bringing the company’s Ku-band satellite capacity to 84 transponders from 36 currently.

It will expand Measat’s support of broadcasting and telecommunications satellite services in Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia and South Asia.

The launching of the 5,897kg MEASAT-3b, which took just 48 minutes to reach the orbit, was broadcast live to 400 secondary school students, at the Nasional Science Centre in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.

MEASAT Global Bhd (MEASAT) bersedia untuk melancarkan satelit MEASAT-3b dari European Spaceport di Kourou, French Guiana pada 12 September (waktu Malaysia).

Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn Bhd, Paul Brown-Kenyon berkata MEASAT-3b akan menjadi penyumbang utama kepada landskap TV berbayar Asia, menyokong platform televisyen ‘direct-to-home’ yang memberi khidmat kepada lebih 18 juta isi rumah.

“MEASAT gembira untuk mengesahkan tarikh pelancaran yang disemak semula,” katanya dalam kenyataan hari ini.

Beliau berkata, MEASAT-3b akan ditempatkan bersama MEASAT-3 dan MEASAT-3a pada 91.5°E, mewujudkan lokasi orbit kukuh dan berkuasa tinggi di rantau ini.

48 transponder Ku-Band berkuasa tinggi akan meluaskan perkhidmatan Direct-To-Home dan VSAT di seluruh Malaysia, India, Indonesia dan Australia, katanya.

Measat-3b launch reset for Sept 12

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14:

Measat Global Bhd has set the new launch date for its Measat-3b satellite to be Sept 12 from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

The US$350 million (RM1.12 billion) satellite – earlier scheduled to be launched on May 29, then June 6 – was held back when the manufacturer of Measat-3b co-passenger asked time for some repairs.

“Once operational, Measat-3b will be a key contributor to the Asian pay TV landscape, supporting direct-to-home television platforms serving more than 18 million households,” said Measat Satellite Systems Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Paul Brown-Kenyon had said.

The latest satellite is designed to provide an additional 48 high powered Ku-band transponders to the 91.5°E orbital slot to expand direct-to-home and VSAT services across Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Australia.

Co-located with Measat-3 and Measat-3a, the satellite would more than double Measat’s Ku-band capacity at 91.5°E creating one of the region’s most powerful and robust orbital locations.

“By end-2015 or early 2016, we will launch another satellite, Measat-3c. This brings our 2017 revenue forecast to US$260 million (RM836.82 million),” Brown-Kenyon had said in May.

“Besides MEASAT-3c, we are already planning three new satellites, namely Measat-2a, Measat-3d and Africasat-1b.”

Measat launch delayed

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27:

MEASAT Global Bhd (MEASAT) today announced that the MEASAT-3b launch, earlier scheduled for June 6 (June 7 Kuala Lumpur time) has been postponed.

The postponement was called after the manufacturer of the MEASAT-3b co-passenger requested time for repairs to their satellite, it said in a statement.

“We are clearly disappointed with the delay and are currently in co-ordination with Arianespace (the launch service provider) on the rescheduling of the launch.

“We will provide an update when we receive further information on the revised launch date,” said Paul Brown-Kenyon, chief executive officer, Measat Satellite Systems Sdn Bhd.
