Value Stream Mapping qualifies to become a powerful tool
Value Stream Mapping – Measure and Analyze phase
One of the most powerful tools in determining process cost and Lead time is Value Stream Mapping! It not only does force us to outline the process steps in detail, but also helps us understand the time each process step or activity eats up.
In Measure phase: VSM is used in measure phase to understand the total lead time in the existing process.
A typical VSM for an existing inward material process is outlined:
In Analyze phase: VSM is used in analyze phase to understand the total lead time in the TO-BE process. Here, multiple options of TO-BE process can be analyzed w.r.t Lead time. A best process can thus be selected based on the optimized lead time yet with simple process steps.
Below is a snapshot of VSM of one of the TO-BE process options:
In the above process it can be clearly seen that the Existing process takes on an average 75 minutes whereas the TO-BE process takes only 30 minutes thereby saving 67% of the total lead time over the existing process
Powerful Tool: VSM thus definitely qualifies itself as one of the powerful tools in Process improvement methodologies. Go ahead and use this wonderful tool.
